The 2018 New York Knicks: Beyond the Zen

We're only two weeks away from the preseason opener so it's time to get our annual thread fired up.

Preseason Opener: 10/3 at The Garden vs the Nets.
    Season Opener: 10/19 at OKC.

Last year was every bit of the train wreck that many predicted. The biggest news is obviously that Phil is gone. Thankfully we parted ways with D-Rose too.

Heading into this year, Melo's situation remains the biggest story around the franchise. It doesn't look like he's going anywhere anytime soon. KP's development remains the other big story. Everyone is excited to get our first glimpse of Frank and we brought back Hardaway Jr in one of the most laughed-at moves of the summer.

    PG: Frank/Sessions/Jack
    SG: Timmy/Lee/Baker/Dotson
    SF: Melo/Beas/Kuz
    PF: KP/ Lance
    C: Willly/Noah/O'Quinn

Others rookies, partial guarantees and camp invitees include Jamel Artis, Nigel Hayes, Luke Kornet, Chasson Randle, Xavier Rathan-Mayes.

This season will certainly not include a trip to the postseason but in true Knick fashion we probably won't be bad enough to land a Top 5 pick. It's still an important season as KP will have his first crack at being the alpha dog while we will find out if we added another key piece in Frank or if we swung and missed with that pick. We'll find out if Noah's career is essentially over or if he can give us 20 minutes a night. What will Willy give us in his expanded role? We might have found a rotation piece in Dotson. Was Timmy a product of ATL's system or did we make a reasonably smart signing?

What are your thoughts heading into the season?

I wonder if Frank starts the season as a starter or comes off the bench to start.

I want him to start but I have a feeling Sessions will and Jack will be first backup because Knicks.

Re: The 2018 New York Knicks: Beyond the Zen

Recently I've been having thoughts (regrets) about passing up on Dennis Smith, Jr.

This season looks like it will be your typical trainwreck. I think the biggest problem is the emergence of Hoodie Melo.

Yeah it's great that he's been locked in and putting in work.

But between Melo's ego and his desire to prove that he's not the 64th "best" player in the league, I think he's going to go into hero mode more often than ever. Again, killing player development and confidence for the players who really need it (Porzingis, Hernangomez, Frank).

        My positives:
        -getting a defensive PG (I think )
-getting Hardaway back (in spite of the insane contract, he should've never been traded and I think he has incredible upside for his age and he is a fan favorite).
-surprisingly the Beasely signing. For some reason I always liked his game. But he's a headcase.
-Porzingis putting on much needed muscle. Hopefully he worked on his conditioning and leg strength because he seems like a guy who will be injured often.
-Minutes for Hernangomez. Don't trade this kid!

        My negatives:
        -Ron Baker's contract. Totally absurd.
-Melo still being on the team.
-Hornacek. The jury is out on this guy. He seems like a jerk to me for some reason.
-The amount of money we have tied up at SG.

        I'm predicting: 30-52

The East is bad and is wide open but something about this team. They just don't have that winning mentality. They lack a vocal leader big time which is one of the reason's having Melo around pisses me off so much.

I don't think Jack makes the team. Non-guaranteed contract, injury problems and Baker. How can they justify paying Baker that amount of money and not giving him minutes? I know he's probably considered a SG but he's really a PG.

Ah didn't realize it was non guaranteed. That makes it so much better. And I totally forgot about Baker.

Yeah sounds like Jack is there in case someone goes down.

I assumed the Jack signing was insurance in case they get into camp and realize it's the worst case scenario with Frank and they feel he can't be a rotation piece this year.

I see Beasley taking whatever Rose took last year.

I guess I like the enthusiasm. I'm interested to see what's to come of Hoodie Melo. Like BigEast said, you love to see the work he's putting in but hate that it basically does us no good. He'll be flagged for the first set of player drug testing for sure.

It'll be another 30-35 win season.

I have to laugh at all these Knick fans on social media talking playoffs. They said the same s**t last year - the most delusional fan base in the NBA.

Presser right now with Horny, Mills and Perry. Mum on Melo, handling all those questions in the manner you'd expect.

                        Take this FWIW but...

Hornacek: "With Frank, we really like what we're seeing...He's doing some great things, and there's an opening there where he can compete."

Even with an awful return, it feels great to get rid of Melo. I'm happy that this era of Knicks basketball is finally in the past.

Far more often than not, watching Melo play basketball got my blood boiling. He had all the physical gifts in the world and a tremendous amount of skill but his intangibles and IQ were dreadful. The man was a phony and fooled a half of our fanbase into thinking he was a far better player than he actually was.
