After reading that great defensive breakdown on the last page.... I think Michigan only uses 3 down linemen

Re: Michigan Wolverines: How to handle the new D?

Has anyone decided what defense to use for Michigan? 3-3-5 was good, but now it looks like Michigan is running a 4-3, I dont know.

Looks like this:
4 down lineman...RE-Roh DT-Van Bergen DT-Martin LE-Graham
3 Line Backers... ROLB-Brown MLB-Ezeh LOLB-Mouton
Secondary...CB-Cissoko FS-Williams SS-Woolfolk CB-Warren

I dont know if I am missing something or what, but I dont really know what to use, anyone have any help?

I use the 3-4 and put Brown at OLB, Ezeh/Mouton at MLB, and Roh at OLB, but when I play, I control him like a ROVER. It's the closest I can get it.

thats not a bad idea, thanks I am going to try that. So you have Brown at LOLB and Roh at ROLB?

Yeah, I mean, it's really tough to say what you do. I was originally for using the 3-3-5, but they've been using that DE/LB position (Roh) in a down stance A LOT.

I think what DK did on his rosters is pretty accurate for a base 4-3 defense:

DE: Graham, Roh (Herron, etc.)
DT: Martin, Van Bergen, Sageese
ROLB: Stevie Brown
MLB: Ezeh, Fitzgerald
LOLB: Mouton

If you chose to run 3-4 do what people said above and move Brown and Roh to OLB, and but Van Bergen at the other DE position opposite Graham.

Ultimately, it's a bit funky, because Michigan is going to pick and chose how it lines up, even if it has similar personnel in the game (i.e. - there still are plays where Roh doesn't put his hand down but operates as a pure rush end). Really, UM is playing Stevie Brown as an OLB, for the most part... (and more than I expected).

Of course, this can still be replicated in a 3-3-5, but at this point it seems like more hassle than its worth. 4-3 is probably best unless they show something different coming up in B10 play.

I'm no Michigan fan but from what I've seen, it looks like they're just playing a 4-3 with Roh playing as a standup End. I would think the best way of using this in the game is just the 3-4 with Roh at OLB.

Has Stevie Brown's position actually been any different from a traditional LB this year? I think a lot has been made of it, but Roh has been more of the wild card.

Ohio State is basically doing the same thing. They're a 4-3 team, but one of their ends has ben in the standup rush position all year.
