Sports Illustrated Speaks on NCAA 2006 and Exclsuive Rights

I just received my newest issue of Sports Illustrated and was shocked to see, on page 21, an article dealing with NCAA 2006. The main idea of the article is the exclusive rights that Electronic Arts now has with the NCAA and NFL. They use NCAA 2006 as an example of how EA can put out a product that hasn't changed all that much from last year's version and still sell well because of its exclusive rights. The writer, Adam Duerson, states basically what we all have been saying regarding EA's monopoly on licensed football games, that the games might dip greatly in improvement from year to year due to its lack of competition. Towards the end of the article Adam brings up the new Blitz: The League game and Road to Sunday saying that while they probably won't hurt EA's sales "they should push the exclusive-rights holders to keep improving their titles every year," He ends the article and preceding line with, "something EA could have done a little better with NCAA Football 06."

We need more articles like this written by people who can have their voice heard. Otherwise EA could care less about what they put out, since everyone will still buy the game anyway because it's the only NFL and NCAA game around.

One thing, though: Sega stopped making their college football game before the exclusive licensing deal went into effect...

Right, It was a VERY Weak effort. If the games don't improve much each year, then why doesn't someone just make roster sets for NCAA 2004? EA improves just enough each year to make me want to keep buying it. They are SO close to the perfect football game. However, perfect football to me is based on Sim qualities, while to the masses, Arcade qualities and gimmicks must be what sells like Matrix-style NFL Street Impact players, Race for the Clown Suit, etc.

It is quite possible though that Sega would have made their NFL team work on an NCAA game this year due to EA getting the exclusive rights to the NFL. It would surprise me if that team failed at creating a quality NCAA football game, and it is a shame that VC isn't going to continue making simulation football games (or so it appears).

Yeah, if the VC football team never puts out another football game then it will go down as one of the greatest injustices ever IMHO. To have a talented team like that just wither away to nothing would be a sin. Hopefully they put out a solid non-licensed game for the hardcore players. which would push EA to continue innovating even though it would'nt make a dent in Madden sales.

Yeah, things like slavery and the holocaust pale in comparison to SEGA not putting out a football game. I see where u are comin from, but don't u think "greatest injustices ever" is somewhat melodramatic?

Actually, I thought "greatest injustices ever" was pretty accurate.
