Correct. When you push either the left (d-line) or right (lb's) button, moving the right stick will make the assignment adjustments described in the on-screen prompt.

L or r button plus left stick will repostion those players without changing their current defensive assignment.

It's a pity EA didn't include tutorial vids a la the current versions of the game. They're terrific, and show what they can do when they put their minds to it.
