Re: Freezing problem on the 360: poll

My 360 gave me the DDE last night while editing rosters. Then this morning, it started making that grinding noise (and froze w/o the DDE message) and I shut down the console.

EA needs to fix this (with a patch or new disks) because it seems like the people that didn't have these problems before are starting to get them. If people are having these problems in-game it makes the game un-playable.

shocked how EA either did not test the disk before shipping or ignored the problem...

Anyone try the old boil the dvd trick? I haven't had any problems with my copy of NCAA for the 360 but when my original xbox would get the DDE I would boil the dvd for about 10 sec and problem would be solved. I always had to do that with the OXM demo disc's, they never worked.

I was having DDEs in-game, until I read on another thread here that you have to let the cut-scenes play through (at least part of the way). Otherwise - you overload the cache (or whatever technical explanation it is that is beyond my limited knowledge). I haven't had one since I started letting the cut scenes play at least part of the way through every time.

Well, I got a responce from EA today (they have actually responded 3 times in the past 3 days, so I'm surprised there). In a nutshell, Robert M. says that I need to get with Microsoft. We knew they would say that, BUT he does say that EA knows there are 3 different firmware revisions on the DVD drives in the 360's and that this problem only seems to be happening on 1 firmware. Not sure if Microsoft is going to upgrade it for free, or more likely ask me to pay the $129 they are telling everyone else, but I'm going to call them after I mow the lawn.

Got my 360 refurb. Got through four whole games so far without any problems, and the game seems to be running smoother on top of that. I'll be extremely pleased if it holds up like this.

What exactly is firmware? and how do I find out what type of firmware is being affected by the disc...

Without getting too complex, firmware is the program within the hardware device (DVD-ROM in this case) that tells the hardware how to work. So the Xbox says "read the disc" and the DVD-ROM's firmware tells the hardware how to move the laser, what power level to use and other stuff so that it can read the disc. For a more in depth discussion on firmware, check out links at http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=what+is+firmware

As for telling what firmware your drive has, I don't know. If it were on a PC, it would be easy to tell, but I don't know if MS has a way that consumers can check the firmware levels on the 360.
