cannot get system maintenance to come up?

I tried to clear the cache after my game was freezing, then I got the 4 red lights on the ring. When clearing do you do the "holding A button while loading way" or the "Y, X,X, LB, RB, X, X way" to clear out the cache....this game is really frustrating.
