It's basically just way to lead your receivers. If you throw the ball while pressing left on the left control stick for example, it will throw the ball a little more to the left of the receiver. This can be good when you have a receiver on a drag route across the field, by using precision passing, you can put it a little further ahead of the receiver to keep the defender from getting it. Same thing with a long ball. If you have a receiver heading out on a streak, try pressing up when you throw the ball and the ball will go much further than if you had just pressed A (or X if you a PS2er, I have no idea what the 360 has). This will give you an advantage if you have a fast receiver because you might be able to take control of him and get some distance from the defender and catch the ball for a big gain. You could also press up and to towards the sideline if the defender is playing inside on you because that might give you a little more room to catch the ball.
