How do I hot route to a smart route?

on PS3? I know it's available I just can't figure it out. Just to clarify: I'm talking about like 3rd and 8 and my TE is running an out short of the sticks and I want him to run it past the sticks or to the sticks ya know. Also, does it work with every type of route? And is it always to the 1st down sticks or can it be the endzone or any yard marker that you would like? And is it pretty accurate as far as finding the sticks or the spot?

You press triangle or square and than R1

Is it me, or does it seem like it's hard to press R1. Sometimes I have to press it several times for the game to register. Maybe it's just my controller .

I think only out, in, and curl routes can be smart routed. So a slant or drag route I'm pretty sure it doesn't work for, wish they did though. Love the smart route feature however.
