You ahve to hold the stick in the correct position until after the kick. If you let go while you have it in the up position it will go any direction. I have had some kicks where I let go too early and it swung around and I had to hit it right back up to keep my kick straight. You have to follow through so to speak.

I agree that it helps to recruit a better kicker. I'm pretty sure accurate kickers aren't as sensitive to how straight you move the stick.

I also usually hold the controller with my left hand and rotate my right hand a little counter-clockwise to line up the natural motion of my right thumb with the up-down axis of the stick (if I don't I have a strong tendency to push kicks to the right).

The only time I've ever seen a really "hooked" kick was on the only iced kick I've had so far:

My swing was pretty off b/c of the weird angle.
