As the sun moves in real time, the shadows will change and "progressive lighting" in a game will actually capture this. ie. the shadows in the first quarter will be different in the second quarter.

They are bringing it back this year after playing around with the lighting scenario last year. I believe in NCAA '08 they knew the direction of every stadium and the effects of the sun/shadows at any time.
