Spread Option Playbook?

What is the best playbook?

I was using USF last night and fell in love with the spread option. I am just wondering is there a better playbook for this?

Not the triple option, but the QB Choice.

Re: Spread Option Playbook?

uf and miss st both have a good selection of spread with a variety of read, speed, wr motion, and a few shotgun triple options with a back as the 1st read and a rb or wr as the pitch read.

Re: Spread Option Playbook?

Here's my order of preference.

1. Mississippi State (easily #1)
2. Auburn
3. Florida
4. Oregon
5. West Virginia
6. Michigan
7. ECU

Aren't Mississippi State and Florida exactly identical? Like Georgia Tech and Navy?

Is there a way to check out the playbooks without going into a game?

The 2 playbooks are both all shotgun and have a lot of the same formations and types of plays, but they're both very different (when you get down to brass tacks).

Top level:
MSU is a better power running pb.
FU has better passing concepts

Lower level:
(I'm at work so I'm just going off of memory)
MSU has a lot of verticals concepts while FU has a lot of mesh concepts. FU also has a lot of PA verts while MSU only has 1.

MSU has the wildcat spread while FU has no wildcat (MSU and FU both have the * heavy formation that has a wildcat package and they both have an empty formation that allows a HB to take the snap, but FU has no wildcat formation).

MSU has 3 SG wing formations while FU only has 2. The 1 that FU is missing is the best one as it has a FB in the backfield and a TE on the line. This plus the wildcat spread is what makes MSU's a better power running pb. Also, a lot of FU's power runs are with the QB. MSU also has a lot of QB powers/blasts, but not as many as FU which also makes MSU's pb a better running pb with the HB. Also, if I remember correctly, FU's ace formation (2 TE) doesn't have as many good HB running plays as MSU's as they've been substituted with QB runs). The best "run the clock out as you keep running the ball when your opponent knows you're going to run" formations in these 2 pbs are the wilddog spread, flex F wing (I think that's what it's called), ace, *animal* heavy formations. Of these 4, MSU has all 4 while FU only has 2 (and 1 of those 2 is neutered WRT HB running).

Florida's goal line package is much more diverse than MSU's (and I think every other team's pb). They've got the normal GL package as well as the Maryland I and a really nice wishbone attack. I personally, however, wouldn't choose a playbook based on a goal line package as probably 98% of my plays are not in a goal line package.

FU's pb has a lot better linking of plays so it's much easier to setup plays with FU's pb.

Those are the main differences I remember between the 2. I like Auburn's as it has some under center formations, but honestly, I have more success with the power running game with MSU's pb than I do with the few under center formations in Auburn's which is why I like MSU over Auburn (I'm a run first guy).
