They don't receive any payment of sort? Wow, so it's free for anyone to just go to any college now? I didn't know that. And here I was laboring under the impression it cost thousands of dollars to go to some of the best schools in the country. Silly me!!

That's the thing though, if you argue that their scholarships are ample compensation, why doesn't that allow their names to be used? My idea was that they could get the names in the game from the start by giving every player the choice to sign a consent form to use their name without further compensation. I'm guessing 80%+ of college players would sign such as form.

I assume it is the same reason why the NCAA will not allow jersey's to be sold with player's names on the back. I would think this is the NCAA controlling brand image more than legal precedent.

Re: EA Locker Rumor

Yeah, I believe if the NCAA wanted to they could have student athletes sign waivers and then the universities would legally have free access to use their names, likeness, etc. However, I don't think the NCAA wants to go that route as that would then further the cause (or outrage, whatever you want to call it) of people who believe athletes should be directly further compensated beyond tuition and room and board.

So in other words, even though they probably legally could go that route they know that they would probably take even more heat for profiting from student-athletes than they do now..

If players were to receive a percentage of sales, then Im sure ea would be allowed to continue using player likeness.
Electronic Arts, Take Two, Adidas, Under Armour, Nike, etc can not compensate players in any way. If they do, it will be detrimental to the player, the company and the university. Players are not allowed to receive payments or any extra benefits from boosters, the university, alumni, or any company. It is against NCAA rules. That is why USC is being investigated by the NCAA and even the federal government and should be hit extremely hard by the NCAA since it is both football and basketball. And that is why SMU received the infamous death penalty back in the '80's.

Re: EA Locker Rumor

The plus side of being a PS3 user is that this is a non-issue.

Hopefully both consoles will add USB file transfer support for Next Gen.
