The only thing that affects top speed is the SPD attribute. For an accurate 40 time game to real life parallel a STATIONARY start MUST be used.

Acceleration is measure in distance per second per second. It's a measure of time.

Two cars that both have a top speed of 100mph would always tie in a race that starts at 100mph. But if one of those cars takes 5 seconds to get from 0mph to 100mph, and the other car takes 10 seconds to get from 0mph to 100mph, the first car will win the race every single time. And while the second difference doesn't seem like much, it is. It's a ton. Think about it, 5 seconds into the race, car A is already traveling at 100mph while car B is traveling at 50mph (and getting faster).

Acceleration is a measure of how fast it takes to get from standing still to top speed. Speed is a measure of top speed. Two players with 99 speed, at a running start SHOULD look identical. Two players with 99 speed, but one has 99accel and the other 1 accel, from a STANDING START should look extremely different.

Someone testing speed and acceleration should probably understand just what exactly speed and acceleration are.

Also, acceleration (and agility, to a lesser extent) effects cornering speed. A running back headed toward the sideline will cut upfield toward the endzone losing less speed if he has a better accel, while a RB with less accel will lose some speed cornering and have to get it back to full speed.
Good clarification. The only place I see that it matters in this game though could be corner speed like u mentioned.

The principles of speed and acceleration are taught in high school physics class. Calculus is way more difficult and not really very applicable to the real world.

And by running start, you mean standing start.

Wouldn't a 10-yard dash mean more then, with acc that is?

I agree, but they time 40s without pads. So there has to be an equalizer (ie running start). Standing start was only a difference of 3 tenth of a second.

No. Acceleration plays a huge factor in playing football. Acceleration is generally the difference between a pocket passer QB and a scrambling QB, as this year both have speeds in the 70s (except the elite scramblers), while the scramblers have great acceleration.

What this means is that a scrambler has the accleration to escape the clutches of a d-linemen, but not necessarily the top speed to start burning LBs and definitely not DBs once he gets into the open field.
