Many FCS conferences have TV deals in place now that weren't in place a few years ago.

The CAA just signed what was called the biggest TV deal in FCS football...not sure how true that is.
I know some of the schools/conferences have TV deals but like you said if you get the game in your area they compete with FBS schools. They play these game to get their name out there. It helps in recruiting. I know because I coach high schools kids and have heard FCS school coaches tell recruits about who they will be playing the next season and how they can be on TV outside local coverage. Its a big part of why they play the games.

My point is that playing an FBS school isn't a conference game so it won't play a role in your chances at an automatic bid. According to your scenario above, you would have been an at-large team anyway had you played and beat another FCS school.

I'm sure the selection committee looks at your schedule and notes that one of your losses was to Miami. Now had you played and lost to another FCS school, then you might not have even got the at-large bid.
