opening coaching job

What team would you consider an opening coaching job?

I'm not necessarily looking for a team to say build up. But I'm wanting to do an dynasty as a coach and move up from schools. Staying at each school for a minimum of 2 seasons.

I was thinking Army, as a starting one, but open to opinions.

Re: opening coaching job

Mike Locksley at New Mexico is essentially a dead man walking there. (He is 1-17 as a head coach with the Lobos). I would definitely consider them an open position.
They're not too bad to build up, difficult though. 2 Star, Mountain West. They have decent pipelines though. (Texas, Arizona)

Re: opening coaching job

Anyone else looking at losing their jobs? That would be a low tier team that a brand new coach could get a job at? Just wanting to look at all of my options.

Todd Dodge got canned last week for North Texas. Texas A&M's Mike "Medicare" Sherman is pretty close too

Re: opening coaching job

Would New Mexico or North Texas be more realistic for a first time coach?

North Texas is always a good starting point, if not just for the Texas pipeline, even if you only recruited out of Texas, you are going to get quality players.

I'd have to agree. North Texas would make sense for a new coach. It's not really a big program. I mean, it's a sub-par conf. And like the above poster said, the Texas market would make for a nice recruiting base, especially for a low-tiered program that you'd be trying to bring up a bit.

Re: opening coaching job

I actually started a dynasty at North Texas, before they fired Coach Dodge. Went 9-4 my 1st year winning a bowl game over Temple and was offered Houston,Minnesota, NC State, Virginia and Washington State. I left for Washington State, because I use to be a season ticket holder for the Cougs.

Minnesota just fired their coach as well. You would get to play in the Big Ten, but if you truely want to start a coaching dynasty I would stay start with a small school like UNT and work your way up to a mid-major type program turn them into a TCU/BSU/Utah Powerhouse before moving on to a BCS school like Minnesota.
