I got a copy of a prospect file from an online dynasty over at Gamingtailgate.com. I spent some time looking at it at work, I mean at home, and was very disappointed to see that player weight is completely random and not tied to the ratings at all. I think we all know that EA isn't using a real physics based engine and weight didn't matter. But I still thought that players abilities would be tied somewhat to their ratings. By that I assumed bigger running backs would be slower and stronger while smaller running backs would generally be quicker and faster. Not true at all. It simply is irrelevant.
I looked at OL as well. There is ZERO relationship between their weight and their strength or run and pass block ratings. You could have a road grading RT be 270 pounds and a nimble pass blocker that struggles in the run game be 330 pounds. I know there are always going to be unique players that don't fit a generic mold but there should definitely be some semblance of realism in a generated recruit's weight vs. his ratings. It would add more personality and realism if there was some correlation.
To be fair, I didn't have numerical figure for the prospect file - just the letter grades so I don't know how they convert to numbers exactly. Maybe the pocket scout guys can chime in. But I did convert them to a number system and found that weight is 100% random. I'm proposing that they generate the ratings of the recruits and then calculate the weight of each recruit based on position and a handful of ratings. It would be a lot better.
I've attached two pdf files that show the results of the weight by category for OL and RBs. I've also attached an Excel spreadsheet that I created to calculate a player's weight based on ratings and position. I did add a small random factor in to keep it somewhat unique but more realistic. As a player gets bigger and stronger over the dynasty maybe they could update the weight to show a player getting bigger as well. I hope EA can tie ratings to weight for NCAA 12. It's not hard.
