A solid recruiting tip

Whenever I get a top notch recruit that I know will be a star I do something special. When I don't promise them a red shirt I find a JUCO recruit and take him in as well. From there that fills the gap for one year and then the stud can come in and take over. It works!

I think there's waaaaay too many variables for this to be a consistent strategy.

Re: A solid recruiting tip

Isn't the plan for a program to have guys already on the roster 'holding' the spot, even if a stud recruit is coming in?
It's a difficult task over the years as I'm only there at TE, QB (to some extent), FS/SS, DE (mostly) and DT (I 'annually' RS 81-83 OVR DTs; my depth chart there, especially, reads downward always starting with Sr at the top and follows a regular class progression), but I'd hate to have to be relying on a JUCO recruit I'd be bringing in to be a 1-yr starter.
I always, even IRL as an ex-college coach, subscribed to the recruit-to-replace-Juniors philosophy.

Re: A solid recruiting tip

In this game that is a bad Idea. The computer gives recruits to those who need them regardless of the ratings they are looking at roster spots. If you have major holes on your team the computer will fill them for you with good recruits. I have seen it way too many times where bad recruiters are rewarded for not filling spots on their roster and just waiting until next year instead of getting a 3 star and sitting him so that in two years he can play if you leave the spot open and not have an adequate replacement for the senior who is leaving the kind computer will give you two new 4 or 5 star guys to replace him. It works and it is pathetic.

My OD is proof that it works. Lets say I get a 4 star MLB commitment. I then find a JUCO player that will start for one year while my stud recruit redshirts. This is if you're thin at a position of course, but it does work.

JUCOs are fantastic in this game. You can find 86-88 overall 4 star JUCOs to fill in. I tend to recruit a few a year depending on my needs at positions so I can have instant players. Usually I'd disagree with going after JUCOs, but with the new tuners, they've become great instant 2 deep players.
