Shaun King was not a scrambler. He was a pocket passer.

According to Rich Rod it doesn't matter.

However the point remains. The notion you need a mobile qb to run the spread is simply untrue.

I have no doubts there were other things at hand.

So just because it doesn't work with Rich Rod (which bkrich just proved wrong with Shaun King) doesn't mean it's true. Tony Pike is as flat-footed and non-mobile as they come, but he was the man during Cincy's Back-to-Back Big East Championships. Chris Leak was a pocket passer and led Florida to a National Championship. I can go on and on here.

Shaun King's college stats. He WAS a scrambler.
  • 1997: 199/363 (54.8%) for 2577 yards and 24 TD vs. 14 INT. 124 carries for 511 yards and 5 TD.
  • 1998: 244/364 (67.0%) for 3495 yards and 38 TD vs. 6 INT. 156 carries for 633 yards and 11 TD.

He really wasn't though. Do you classify Andrew Luck as a scrambler?

Going by how the game classifies players, Id say he was atleast "Balanced"... He can get yards on the ground but is accurate enough passing that he does not have to often. I dont know, whats his 40? I guess I could put King in that category too.

But I would not classify either as a pocket passer.

Either way, the game needs to start brreaking down the spread offense.... there is just to many variations of it to be lumped together into one.

Someone mentioned Tony Pike.... Perfect example... Brian Kelly's spread offense is for a Pocket Passer. Rich Rod's is not. You can go down the line of spread offenses team by team and each one is a little bit different. Some are vastly different. We saw last season exactly how it does NOT necessarily translate well between Scrambler and Pocket Passer with Florida.

I think that's more Brantley's fault than it was the system. Chris leak did just fine before in Meyer's system. Gus Malzhan showed how flexible it can be too. He was the OC at tulsa before Auburn. In Malzhan's last year, David Johnson threw for 4,531 yards, that's a stark contrast from the offense he ran last year.

Leak struggled under Meyers spread when he first got there, they had to adjust the playbook a bunch to fit him. They did not really open the playbook up completely again until Tebow took over. I dont know if they tried to do that with Brantley or not.
