Re: Fired Out of Left Field

So here is how it played out. I was offered the head coaching jobs at Florida Atlantic, Akron, Eastern Michigan and New Mexico State before I accepted the head position at Rice. Granted my buddies all got first dibs on these jobs, but the fact that so many head coach offers came my way made me feel that at least some appreciated our offensive season at Arkansas State.

Rice did set some stiff goals coming off their 4-8 season. Over the two year contract, I have to win 8 games in a season and 75% of my games in a season (I think that's a 10-3 year.). Thankfully, those two goals are only supposed to have pass impact.

Going back over their last 10 seasons... 2001-2010, they are 79-45. That's a .637 winning percentage. In that time, they finished in the Top 25 on 6 different occasions, including a #3 and two #8 finishes. They're also 4-3 in bowl games.

Care to retract that statement?

There was serious discussion about Penn State possibly trying to convince JoePa to retire 5-6 years ago. Fortunately, his team had a great year and finished in the top 10, I believe. But if it would've been a 7-5ish year, I don't think he would've been retained another year.

In the 2 dynasties I've done, he's retired after the first year, but I also changed his age his real age. They have him younger than his real age in the game, so maybe that's what caused it.

It definitely shouldn't be coded in that he will be the coach forever... that's just completely unrealistic. And we're all looking for realism right? Isn't that what this thread was created about?

Re: Fired Out of Left Field

A few things:

1. I'm pretty sure any coach with an expiring contract can get fired Sounds obvious, but no one is safe in this game. I know this because I always go through the CC every off-season declining all of the offers so I can see all available jobs, then I reload it. One year, Nick Saban's contract expired and the first time around his contract was renewed. I reloaded and he was fired after going 11-2 the previous year. I reloaded again because that was completely unrealistic and looked at his job security. It was 88%.

2. The whole coordinators getting fired when HCs are fired is usually true in real life but I don't think it is in the game. In my current dynasty, I was OC at South Carolina and won the Heisman with Marcus Lattimore in my first year there. My team went 8-5 though and Spurrier's contract ran out. He was fired and I was promoted to HC. A few years later, Gene Chizik got fired and I took the HC job at Auburn. Malzahn and Roof are still my OC and DC, respectively.

3. Joe Paterno coached for 5 seasons in my dynasty before retiring.

Yeah, realism is correct. But how many guys play one dynasty for 30 seasons? I'll revamp my statement by saying Joe Pa should be safe for at least 5-8 seasons... that would put him, at worst, in his mid-90's.

Part of me thinks that guy will be coaching there long after I'm gone! LOL I just don't know college football w/ out the guy and I'm not even a Penn State fan. He's just been cemented there so long it will seem so wrong whenever he does leave.
