So what does keying on a player on defense do?

This is in regard to the pre-snap adjustment. I try and use it but feel like I'm screwing it up.

Does it shift the defense's entire attention to one single player? Because I've noticed that when I try and use it for one wide receiver my corner on the other side of the field will sometimes completely fail to cover his guy (either in zone or man), resulting in a huge play on the other side of the field. Other times it works in a way that makes sense, like keying on a running back causes my team to get sucked in even more for play action.

Yet oftentimes when I key on a RB I get destroyed by screen passes, whereas if I don't I won't.

I just feel like I'm using this feature wrong. Is it just something that is supposed to be really situational like you know what's going on. Or is it something that is just best reserved for cheesers online who keep doing the same thing the whole game?

Supposed to double cover a reciever if possible. Seems to help with RB's as well. It's supposed to be a gamble where you get burnt for making the wrong decision.

The description in '11 (I'd guess it functions the same way in '12) is that in zone (it doesn't do anything in man) players will give priority to covering the keyed receiver when he's in their zone.

Pretty sure in '12 it mentions double coverage
