NCAA Bowl Games? Need clarifying for a non-college viewer

Frankly, I never watch college football, so I'm uncertain how the championships work. I'm curious is there a Bowl Game where the #1 and #2 teams do battle? If so, what is it called?

it's just called the BCS National Championship game, #1 and #2 in the final BCS standings face each other. BCS = Bowl Championship Series. I think the Current sponsor is Tostitios, it that matters.

The other 4 major bowls are the Sugar, Fiesta, Rose, and Orange bowl.

It's one of most idiotic systems to ever be implemented.

A big playoff would've been nice.

A team has to be 6-6 to be bowl eligible, but that does not guarantee it.

Each conference has bowl tie ins, which aside from the (AQ) or automatic qualifying conferences or largely irrelevant.

The major conferences get first shot at at large bids which means 6-6 isn't a guarantee in, and a 7-5 team may get over looked if they are from a small conference if its a Big Ten team. For example.

Not really. It is just the most idiotic system to never be replaced. Pretty sure in 1935, a playoff wasn't as a big a deal or necessary. They had the common sense to know that there was no way to decide a real champion and polling was just a recognition. And after all, it was just a game. Not like now where millions are on the line.

I don't know if anyone has actually answered this guys question;
There are 32 Bowl games total. You must get 6 wins to qualify for one of these Bowl Games.
Conferences have automatic tie-ins to all of them. For instance, the MAC winner qualifies to play in the Motor City Bowl.
As one guy said, the more prestigious Conferences get the Tie-In to the more prestigious Bowl Games due to mainly financial considerations and Television Revenue.
But, there are amongst those 32 odd Bowl Games, FOUR are reserved for the biggest honor.. A BCS Bowl.
Those FOUR are ..
The Tostitoes FIesta Bowl
The Rose Bowl
The Sugar Bowl
The Orange Bowl

All four of these Bowls have their natural Conference Tie-ins.
For instance, the Rose Bowl is traditionally held between the winners of the Big 10 Conference and the Pac-10.
The National Championship rotates between these four Bowls.
So if it's the Rose Bowl's turn, the game might be between Alabama of the SEC and Texas of the Big 12 instead. That would be the actual National Championship that year.
I think someone said it's the Fiesta Bowl's turn this year.
All in all, I agree that we need a playoff system. Perhaps with re-alignment, we might end up with 4 super conferences. Then we could actually address the white elephant in the room.
Anyway, I hope I got all that correct. Someone might alter what I just said.
And I hope it makes sense to you.

the National Championship game is a "5th BCS bowl", it doesn't replace one of the 4 major bowls. it does rotate from those major bowl game locations though(so one year it's played in the Rose Bowl stadium, another year in Miami, ect....)

Oh, ok. I forgot about that. Isn't that just recently? Or am I getting senile?
