Stopping the option and diverse offense

What are the best ways to stop a team that has a good option attack but can also run up the middle, throw the deep ball, and throw the hook routes, all out of the same formation (shotgun spread w/ one back)? I played against a guy online who does all these things well, and I couldn't stop him because his offense is so diverse. Any thoughts?

Re: Stopping the option and diverse offense

i find that using the 5- 2 defense, with the db's up, and line spread out, you can stop anything but the run up the middle... using the dime, you can do well against everything but the run up the middle, and the 3-4 can stop the run up the middle, but not option very well...

hope you get lucky, and just pick a defense...the 5 - 2 works well...especially if you control a linebacker

Not with the spread offense though because if they throw with more than two receivers you're going to get burned.

Very true. Whenever they run an I-Form, thats when you can use your 4-4 defense.

Put SS's at OLB in your 4-4 to make it a 4-2-5. The S's (or inverts) are in perfect run-support position, but are athletic enough to man up or play an effective zone coverage.

Re: Stopping the option and diverse offense

The shotgun spread offense is very difficult to defend. I use that style of offense. If the defense wants to blitz and use bump coverage I'll audible to some pick plays out of the shotgun bunch formation. If they want to drop back I'll run Qb draw, option, and Hb draw. The defense that gives me the most difficulty is the zone blitz. Against the 4-4 and 5-2 you can hit the deep skinny vertical routes down field since those defenses aren't designed for defending spread formations. Plus agianst those two defenses the I'd have a field day with the Shotgun Bunch set. Experiment with the zone blitz. That gives me the most trouble.
