Re: Great games you have played
I just played a game so great that I feel like I should take the week off to enjoy it like a real football game. I was the OC at Texas A&M for four years, winning the national championship my last two seasons and only losing one game in that stretch. I wanted to take over a minor school as my first head coaching job so I went with San Diego State. I scheduled A&M week three because I wanted to play against the recruits I had all brought in, though I was fully expecting to get crushed with an 82 rated team versus an upper 90's.
I got an early lead due to returning the opening kickoff, but two early picks gave them big lead at half. I ended up returning another kick-off and threw a beautiful PA deep ball but my team just can't stop their offense once they got going. Everytime we get a sack to force 3rd and 22, they convert it. I throw two more picks as my receivers just can't separate and the pass rush is brutal versus my poor line. By mid third I'm down 38-28 and I get a some lucky stops, but my offensive drive stalls inside the twenty due when I go for it on 4th and 3 rather than kick a FG that I am terrible at, but I am strip sacked. I get another great defensive stop due to clutch tackles right before the first down and manage to work my way downfield and I drive down for another surprising TD with a high pressure pass into traffic that my possession receiver muscles for.
I finally stop them again and get the ball back with 6 minutes left, and I drive down with the running game aiming to score and run the clock so I will have just enough time for one more possession. I get stopped and have to go for the tying FG with about 3 minutes left, but I shank a short one. A&M tries to run the clock and after a first down on 4th and short I'm down to taking time-outs to stop the clock between runs. Before I take my final, I get a strip and get the ball back with less than 40 seconds at around the 30. I manage an in-bounds first down pass, some incompletions, and a big corner route to get me down to about the 30 with 16 seconds left, but on my first play I am sacked and have to take my last timeout with 11 secons left. I call vertical shakes with an empty set, anticipating them covering my deep guys and hitting the shake over the middle for the first. Somehow there is one defender (the CB who picked two already from me) in position near my right verticals, and he has to shade heavily towards the faster one on the inside, so I throw one to my outside receiver and he attempts to close. They both jump for the ball but his attempt to pick misses, and my receiver's better position let him come down with the ball at the 3, and then he jukes the safety to get into the endzone. Had he been tackled, I would have been dead.
