I've had a lot of success with play action. Not useless at all.

Try shifting your line to the blitzing side, this has helped me with PA. Also, use it more when it says setup

Play action is effective, but you are hit and miss when you do run it. So you already know you gotta first establish the run, but you also need to take focus on mainly one target when you do run it.

PA rollouts work pretty well. They give you an extra second to pass to your hot receiver, and allows mobile QBs open field to run.

it's been good for me when i run no huddle with oregon and get a couple of nice runs through read option

Against the CPU or Human? I just play offline, and in years past didn't find much value it in....even if I wasn't sacked, I never fooled the CPU defenders. So there wasn't much benefit, but there was added risk in getting sacked before getting out of the animation.
