What's up with the helmet stripes on some of the Tennessee and Texas players? It isn't on all of them. I am guessing it means something during practice? Does anyone know?

It's to help the coaches track how the QB is viewing the field, kind of a way to track the QBs eyes and head movements during drills/practices

I don't know specifically about those two teams, but some teams use helmet stripes/logos as rewards for players. Sometimes it's the Freshmen that have to earn a stripe/logo, other times it's everyone.

Could also denote an injured player that no one else can make contact with but I don't know if a team would use a helmet stripe for that.

edit: just looked up Tennessee and that's exactly what it is. Freshmen have to "earn their stripes" so they start off with the black one.

The stripes indicate freshman they have to earn to take their stripe off or that's what they do at Tennessee. At my hs I as a fresh had to wear a green jersey even though are team colors are navy blue and Carolina

THIS. at the college I played at, we would use the helmet stripes during our team drills and using the camera angles to see if QBs made their reads, linemen kept eyes on assignments, and defensive players making reads, etc.

granted eventually we all got our helmet stripes for the season. when camp started, only seniors and underclassmen with 100% offseason and spring ball attendance began camp with their helmet decals. everyone else had to earn them. they were issued to a player at every position group after every practice, if somebody had earned them.

another quick thing I noticed recently with Texas. they have switched their knee brace colors from the burnt orange to white. assuming because they will match the pants better.
