NCAA '99 certainly did not have it, to my knowledge. You just had WRs and CBs.

I think we ought to have more options on how to configure the defense. For instance, some teams play with Sam and Will LBs, others play with LOLB and ROLB. Some teams have strong-side DEs and weak-side DEs, some just RE and LE. Some teams have Field and Boundary corners, some have LC and RC, and some match up the top corner with the other team's top receiver; Some teams have a rover, some have a strong safety (and yes, there's a difference in the way that they play). I'd like to see the 4-3 alignment that Madden had, in which the SAM was much closer to the Line of Scrimmage, directly over the TE, giving almost a 5-2 look. It's a common pro defense that some college teams emulate.

EA is slowly catching up to the complexities of the defensive side of the ball, but they're not there just yet.

You better be correct on that because I swear NCAA '99 used flankers, split ends, WLBs, SLBs, LCB and RCBs and so on.

If anybody still has the game ( which would surprise me), check this out for me please.

Exactly, just little things like these would make playing defense better. If you had a good strongside backer that could guard a TE, I would want him on him the whole game. It shouldn't matter what side he lines up on.

Re: One thing EA needs to do is have strongside and weakside linebackers

IIRC '99 did have RCB and LCB, but they didn't have SE and FL.

I also wish EA could expand the personnel packages, perhaps like Madden did it. I want to be able to put my pass-rushing specialist in on 3rd and long.
If I could suggest it, I'd do it this way:
For offense and defense, there's really 3 major positions. On offense you have the OL (or the QB, or neither), the WRs, and the RBs. Defensively, you have the DL, the LBs, and the DBs. When you select a formation, ie. before you select a play, you could use the square, circle, and triangle buttons to change the personnel packages at one of those positions. Then, at each position, you coud have, say, up to 5 different packages of players to insert. So, say defensively, triangle changes the DL package. It's 3rd and long, and you're lined up in a 4-2-5 defense. You press triangle twice to bring in your pass-rushing specialist DE and switch a DE to DT. You then, to keep the same look, press circle to switch to the DB package where a dog safety is replaced by a cornerback, giving better pass coverage ability. You guys see where I'm going with this? Real defense is so much more complex than EA models, and I would love it to death if we could do something like this.

There still hasn't been a game that I have played that gets D-Line rotations realistic. Defensive Linemen are constantly rotating in and out to stay fresh. It doesn't happen in the games. What I usually do is put my Pass rush specialist in Nickel or Dime.

yup, thats one area of realism that they need to work on. flip the sam and willy backers, as well as the free and strong safeties in relation to the TE, and make it easier to give your dt's and de's a rest. make it part of the package system, madden style. it'd be easy to do, give it cliche name like "total personel control", and act like its the second coming of christ, and boom there's part of your marketing plan for 2006. somebody needs to post this idea at maddenwishlist.com....

Agreed, I've been wanting this feature for a while. It can be that hard to implement.

Didn't College Football USA 96 have the Flanker and Split End distinctions?
