Question Play doesn't count????

I had the strangest play happen to me over the weekend. I was playing as Bowling Green against Louisville. Middle of the 4th Qtr on my own 30. I select a play where all my WR's slant to the left. No one is open and my QB starts to scramble to the right. He beats the DE and heads down the sideline and runs out of bounds at the Louisville 30. I hear the stadium announcer then say "QB runs for no gain" and sure enough, I have the ball back at the orginal LOS?!? I select replay just to see if it shows the QB running down the sideline. It does. The only odd thing is looks like there is a ref's hat or some other odd thing on the ground down the right sideline.

I was not too happy about having a 40 yard run taken away in a close game. If the CPU is going to cheat, at least call a holding penalty. Have you ever heard of this happening before?

I'm pretty sure the hat means a recierver stepped out of bounds but I don't know why that count against your run.
