Restricted Free Agents

Can someone explain how it's determined which draft pick is awarded as compensation for signing a restricted free agent? I started out as the Texans head coach and signed a Giants guard as a RFA and when I got to the draft I found out that my #1 draft choice had been awarded to the Giants as compensation! I never would have made the offer if I'd known that. Did I miss something that told me I'd have to give up my #1 pick when I made the offer? Or is there some kind of compensation range that determines which draft pick you'll give up?

I don't want to try to sign RFA's unless I know in advance what I'll have to give up.

Re: Restricted Free Agents

I noticed that when you go and talk to the agent at the very bottom of what the players wants it will show R1, R2, etc. Letting you know what pick you have to give up.

Now if you just go with want the player wants I'm not sure that it shows it there. I think you have to go to the screen where you decide what you want to give him.

I think its based on the qualifing offer that you give the RFA, but I could be wrong. I signed an RFA from Arizona for 1 year for pretty close to the minimum, and gave up a 6th rounder.

I do wish that it would tell you when you sign them what you'd be giving up as compensation.

Hmmmm, I didn't notice that. I'll make sure to look for that next time. Thanks!

Re: Restricted Free Agents

It's all based on the qualifying offer. The top offer requires a 1st and 3rd, the 2nd requires a 1st, and the 3rd requires the original round that they were drafted in.
