Contract extensions and the salary cap

I'm in 2009 with the Cowboys. Terence Newman's contract is about to expire and he wants a new one. He currently makes $6 million a year, I have $12 million in cap room, but whenever I try to negotiate it tells me I don't have enough salary cap room to continue. What am I missing?
