Xbox Live/Patch

I have an xbox360, but not Xbox Live, will I need to subscribe in order to get the patch? Is there a free xbox live account?

Yes - you do need a Live account. As far as free cards, some do pop up in games from time to time (usually like a 48 hour free trial), but you probably are better off getting the Live card from a Best Buy or Circuit City-type place

Silver membership is free. You just need to register with xbox live. Game updates are free, but playing multiplayer online requires the Gold membership.

Please allow mw to throw in my experience.

I am not sure if it still the same way, but when I first got the 360 a few years ago, here is how it broke down.

For Madden 07 *I believe, and any other game for that matter, any "bug" patches were always free. You only needed a Silver account to get online with. Silver=free.

However, for some inexplicable *Greedy (?) reason, you had to start up an online match against someone *requiring Gold *Gold=Cash. When you chose someone to play against, the game would tell you you had to update your roster before continuing. Thus you recieved the "updated" rosters. Why you couldn't get the rosters for free remains a mystery "money money yeah yeah"

I live up in the montains now with no dsl, so we can't get Silver or Gold=(, but I believe it is still the same way.

I think that's right. Patches will show up as soon as you start the game. Theoretically, roster updates should be free too but EA has started tying them into online play. Rather than having a dedicated roster update section, it just automatically loads when you play online. This means that roster update requires gold membership.
