What does the padlock icon mean?

One of my players has what appears to be a padlock icon next to his portrait on the roster screen. Does anybody know what that means?

You benched him on the depth chart for someone else and now can't put him back.

That can't be what it is cause my starting WR had that and I never benched him and he was still starting.

I can't say this is the answer, but I have seen that symbol only once, right after the Owner/GM asked me to start a second-string LB in lieu of the first stringers and I promised. Then the padlock symbol appears at the second stringer profile (may be it was always there, I just didn't notice) Don't know if the padlock has anything to do with starter promise.

ive only seen the icon after a staring young player / benching under-performing player event occurs

Could this be due to giving up some power to a specific coach who is locking the player in?
