My question is Will I be fired after next season if I can't remedy this cap problem? Also, if I release players with a high cap penalty (my DT Warren is useless at 74 but makes $6.3M/yr with the same amount of cap penalty) does that affect the current year or the following year? Thankfully I have $9M in cap room for 2010.

Cap penalties and Negative cap space? Please help!
So, I'm almost done with season 1 as the Raiders and I have major cap issues. I re-signed Asomugha and the RT Wilson who is a 90 because those are 100% keepers and 2 of my season goals. Unfortunately they are pricey and on the salary cap screen it says I have -$2.6M cap space for next year.

I don't think you will be fired over cap room, at least you won't be fired just over that. If you release/trade a player before the draft, then the cap penalties apply to this year. After that, the penalties apply to next year. I am not sure of the exact point, but the rollover happens after the draft. So, I'm almost done with season 1 as the Raiders and I have major cap issues. For my career, I chose my franchise carefully. Most teams have at least a few people who are overpaid, but I think Oakland is particularly bad in this area. Be very careful with your transactions, because you will always need more cap room than you estimate. HC is very realistic about injuries and you will find yourself dipping into the free agent pool many times during the year.
I find that Denver is a great franchise to start with. They have lots of cap room to start and only a couple of players who are mildly overpaid.Last edited by swatter555; 11-24-2008, 12:58 AM. -

I have hosed a few salary caps, more than I care to admit.
Every time I do it though, I just leave the team at the end of the season so somebody else can clean up my mess lol. And usually I can tell ahead of time that they're going to be having cap trouble down the road, so I leave before it becomes a problem for me.Last edited by sixtydashone; 11-24-2008, 02:30 PM.Comment

Any player released or traded before June 1 counts to the season you are in, after June 1 all Bonus moneys are applied to the next season.
That is why there is a round of cuts in early June every year. The bonus money won't come due until the following season.Comment

Does HC'09 follow that same rule? I know you're right about the NFL, June 1st rule, just not sure about HC. I never noticed.Comment

I am pretty sure it does follow the rule, if you cut a player during the season you see the cap hit take effect the next season, at least for the bonus money of the contract, the game also tells you how much you save in salary plus the cap figure.
anyone can test this I can doulble check check your cap money for the current season and then the next, start from a fresh save, cut a big multi year contract guy with signing bonus during the season or at least after June 1 and see what happens to the current and next years cap
I am in Feb right now so may not get to test this until the weekend. But I will test the before june 1st cap hit should be to the current year.Comment
