The best help I got from the strat guide on coach building is to max out your performance stat (players answering to you perform at highest level). Then after that, use remaining points for your coach's focus, or to make up for your WEAKEST position coach.

For my head coach I max performance and then work on specials related to improving my assistant coaches abilities or my player's learning. I see my HC as a motivator.
