-----------
A. Overview
-----------

Welcome to my first FAQ. This guide is written assuming you've downloaded the
patch/roster update. If you have not, things may be different. I am a very
in-depth and obsessive compulsive player, and I have spent a lot of time on
this game. There will be a lot of detail in this guide as well as my rationale
for every philosophy I use and decision I make. The first overall thing you
need to know about this guide is that it is based on super-simming all of the
games. This way you still get all of the skill points for your coaches,
however you do not have to spend hours playing the games. I sometimes jump
in a game if it is very close late in the game, but I usually resort to the
save-test-load method with super-simming for my games. I always save right
before a game and if my team loses or someone gets injured, I simply load and
try again.

-------------------
B. Super-Sim Issues
-------------------

There are four main things to take into account when deciding whether to
super-sim or play a game. First, the difference in your passing game is
remarkable. When you control the game, passing is nearly unstoppable. When
you super-sim the game, passing is greatly reduced to almost being slightly
below average production. Second, the difference in your running game is also
remarkable... although exactly the opposite. When you control the game,
running is extremely difficult and rarely productive. When you super-sim,
running becomes above-average. Third is defense. Trying to control defense,
especially late in the game, is not as effective as super-simming. Your
defense will almost always perform better while super-simming. Finally, there
is a highly increased turnover frequency while super-simming. There will be
MANY more interceptions and a few more fumbles when super-simming. Carefully
think about those four things before deciding whether or not you want to
super-sim your games or play all of them.

----------------------------------
C. Head Coach Creation/Development
----------------------------------

I have a very strong opinion on the way to develop your coach. I always use
the Commander personality, it is by far the best combination of attributes.
There are four simple steps. First, max out performance. You’ll need it.
Second, start working on the Physical and Intangible Development sections. I
go through and get level 2 of all physicals and then level 2 of all
intangibles. I repeat with level 3, then level 4, and finally level 5. The
reasoning behind this is that you’re going to be constantly drafting players
and keeping your roster young. To stay under the salary cap you’re going to be
not re-signing a lot of players and you’re going to have a high turnover on
your roster. These development skills are crucial to helping your young
players develop and reach their potential. Third, switch over to the special
skills section and purchase Ambition. It seems like a lot, but down the line
it’s statistically worth it. Fourth, start getting all of the special skills.
There are a few things I avoid entirely. First, I don’t ever get Chemistry
because my team wins every game and everyone’s always happy. I don’t ever get
Play Calling or Strategy because I super-sim every game and my coordinators
handle those responsibilities. I don’t ever get Learning Development because
that’s the most over-rated and useless thing in the game. If you have good
players, they’ll learn the playbook. Even if they don’t, it hasn’t seemed to
matter in my game. I always just train my important rookies during the
training camps to make sure they’re at least somewhat competent and train
individual plays every time during the season, completely ignoring all other
gameplans. I’m not going to be controlling the game to use them, so what’s the
point?

----------------------------------
D. Other Staff Hiring/Development
----------------------------------

My criterion for hiring and firing coaches, while using the save-test-load
method, is always potential. At the end of each off-season I save, fire every
one of my coaches, and see what other coaches are available. I write down
their ratings and load my game to look at the original coaches. In general, if
the new coaches have higher-leveled ceilings in performance, physical and
intangible development, strategy, and play calling only if they’re an OC or a
DC, I hire the new coach regardless of how good the current coach is. Use your
best judgment. In developing coaches, use the exact same path I laid out for
the head coach, with three exceptions. First, max out Strategy after Physical
and Intangible Development before starting on specials. Second, there will be
no ambition purchases, even for offensive and defensive coordinators. If it’s
there, don’t get it. Finally, if it’s an offensive or defensive coordinator,
max out play calling after performance before starting on the development
skills.

------------
E. Injuries
------------

Injuries in this game are very frequent and occur, at least in my perception,
even more when controlling a game. MAKE SURE to check for them after each
super-sim before saving. You don’t want to save your game after a big win
only to discover one of your best players is out for the season. Also, this
can affect how you look at players. For example, don’t draft Glen Dorsey in
the first draft. Frank Okam and Dre Moore are good and can be obtained in
later rounds. Yes, he’s an amazing player. He will, however, infuriate you
when he forces you to re-sim half the time because he hurts himself. After the
first few games of the season, you’ll figure out who those players on your team
are and trade them out of sheer frustration.

------------------------------
F. Contract Glitch
------------------------------

This is the one prominent glitch that was not fixed by the patch for the game.
If you load your game after Tuesday begins, free agents or players that come to
you that week to re-sign will ask for outrageous contracts. Once you open the
window, you are screwed. Don’t do it. If this happens to you, and your only
save file is after the Tuesday of that week, you do have an option if it’s a
player trying to re-sign. If it’s a free agent, you’re out of luck. That
player will sign a monstrous deal with some other team, screwing over their cap
years down the road. If they’re a player trying to re-sign, simply quit, load
your game, and ignore him and wait until the next week after Tuesday, when
something in the game re-sets and the values return to normal. Then when he
pops up to re-sign, start negotiations and things should be normal. The moral
of the story: always save on Sunday or Monday. I always save immediately
after my games on Sunday, and that prevents this problem from happening. This
way, if a player I want to re-sign won’t accept offer 1, I just load from
Sunday and try again. If you were to save right before the negotiation and try
again, he’d ask you for an outrageous amount of money.

----------------------
G. Player Acquisition
----------------------

The most important rule: never spend money on free agents unless they are the
best or very close to the best at their respective positions. Even then, I
would only sign them if it’s a position of need. You will always find gems in
the draft and the salary cap is your biggest long-term issue. Avoid trading
players with big bonuses to avoid salary cap penalties. Also, always
save-test-load until you get a player to accept the smallest contract
(offer 1). You’re going to need the cap room. Finally, never franchise tag a
player. If you really want to keep them that badly, you should have re-signed
them already and will be paying much less money that way.

------------------
H. Draft Strategy
------------------

I always just ignore all scouting except the individual workouts. Other teams
will be more likely to draft players that you focus your scouting on, so I just
skip all other scouting. I then save when the first Individual Workout
appears. Then, systematically look up and write down every player in the draft
class by quitting after using all of my individual workouts, loading the game,
and doing it again with the next players down the list. After I do this, and I
know which players I want to draft, I strategically use my individual workouts
on players that are close to the players I want to draft high in the draft on
my draft board, making it more likely that the player I’m looking for will slip
a little further. Trade around as much as necessary to get the players you
need, I rarely take players in the 1st round. I always get Kenny Phillips (SS)
in the first draft late in the 1st round and I’ve occasionally traded up to get
Keith Rivers (OLB). I also always draft Ozzie Jones in the mid-late 1st round
in his draft class. That’s pretty much it... you can usually find steals so
there’s really no point in sacrificing the picks to get up there and then the
cap room to sign the high picks.

----------------------
I. Playbook Selection
----------------------

On the defensive side of the ball, I just love the Cover 2. No particular
reason for it, I suppose. I’m just a fan. I also have noticed that the 3-4
doesn’t usually translate well to video games, so I almost never choose it.
I’m not a big fan of Rex Ryan’s 4-6, so that basically leaves finding a good
scheme in the 4-3. In my opinion, the Tampa Cover 2 scheme is by far the best
one. Thus, I always use it. Feel free to use whatever you want, that’s just
personal preference. I obviously have tailored all of my positional
philosophies around it, so if you don’t want to use the Cover 2, you’re
probably not going to find my scouting ratings of defensive personnel quite
as useful.

On the offensive side of the ball, however, there’s a clear best. The Shotgun
formation dominates all others in production when controlling the game,
followed closely by the Empty formation. Thus, creating a special playbook is
best. I started with a Patriots playbook and removed all of the I formation
plays and added all plays for the Shotgun and Empty formations. There were a
couple of exceptions, however. I removed all counter runs and screens.
They’re both worthless in this game and almost never result in positive
yardage. Every counter I’ve ever seen has resulted in a loss, usually large.

-----------------------
J. Offensive Philosophy
-----------------------

I design my offense around the one simple truth above: when controlling the
game, the Shotgun and Emtpy formations are by far the most effective
formations. Running and passing both perform better. I have not yet perceived
a difference when super-simming. Due to this, here is my position-by-position
philosophy analysis:

QB: I’ve heard a lot of different arguments. Most often I hear that I should
use a Pure Passer or Arm Strength/Tools philosophy because I’ll be passing so
much. I also hear that I should use the Mobile philosophy and run the spread.
I ignore both of those arguments and choose the Balanced philosophy. Here’s
why: both models of quarterback would work in my system. Therefore, without
any weighting, I simply want the most talented QB out there. I only have 2 QB
on my roster, and my backup is whoever is cheapest. The backup QB is
completely irrelevant. If the backup QB ever sees a snap, then I’m almost
certainly re-loading and trying that game again b/c my starting QB is hurt.

HB: It’s pretty obvious that I should use the Speed philosophy. The only other
argument here might be receiving, but I still think speed is more appropriate.
I keep 2 HBs on my roster, but this is a position where the talent of the
backup does matter. If you have two solid HBs, then you’re good to go. Ozzie
Jones (if you get that 2009 draft path) is a god.

FB: This might seem weird at first, but I go with the Blocking philosophy.
Here’s why: there’s only one required on your roster. Since you always use
the shotgun or the empty formation, he’s only going to be in for the goal-line
set, where he’ll always be blocking.

WR: It’s all about the Speed philosophy. I keep 6 on my roster, as I have
five-WR sets on the field a lot. You can almost always find receivers with
potential 94-96 late in the draft, if not undrafted. In the Ozzie Jones draft
class, 4 WRs with potentials of 96, 96, 95, and 94 respectively go undrafted.

TE: I choose the Playmaker philosophy. I could have gone with Route/Hands, but
Playmaker has more of an emphasis on speed and that’s what we’re really looking
for in a shotgun/spread offense. Also, one of the shotgun sets is a twin-TE
set that has some great plays, so I highly advise having two very good TEs on
your roster. I vary between having two TEs or three on my roster, but I always
only have two active on gameday.

OT: I would normally choose this option anyway, but with our offense we’ve got
to use the Pass Blocking philosophy. I keep 3 OTs on my roster.

OG: I go with the Balanced philosophy. A lot of people go with
Size/Strength/Engulfer, but that just doesn’t perform. In this game, you don’t
need size. You need skill. I want the best overall talent. I keep 3 OGs on
my roster.

C: I go with the Balanced philosophy here as well for the same reason as above.
I keep 2 Cs on my roster.

-----------------------
K. Defensive Philosophy
-----------------------

Again, I use the Cover 2 system. Every position philosophy I use is designed
to complement that system.

DT: I go with the 1-Gap Penetrator philosophy. Other options could be
prototype or balanced, but neither of those really fit the bill. The 1-Gap
Penetrator focuses on pass rush as well, and the Cover 2 system needs pressure
from its front four due to almost never blitzing. I keep 4 DTs on my roster,
and it's a position that accrues a lot of fatigue. You want solid backups here.

DE: I go with the Prototype philosophy here. You could go with the undersized
speed rusher, but I’d prefer to stay away from sacrificing that much run
support when we will be rarely blitzing. I keep 4 DEs on my roster.

OLB: Pretty simple here, I use the Speed/Cover 2 philosophy. I keep 3 OLBs on
my roster, although occasionally I've kept 4.

MLB: Also pretty simple here, I use the Speed/Coverage philosophy. I only keep
2 MLBs on my roster.

CB: Again, using the Cover 2 philosophy is pretty self-explanatory. I keep 5
CBs on my roster.

FS: Dropping back in zone coverage at all times means we’re going with the
Centerfielder philosophy. I keep 2 FSs on my roster.

SS: Although most Cover 2 systems use a Hard Hitter at this spot, I always go
for the Coverage philosophy. I’m all about speed and dropping safeties back
into zone coverage rather than having safeties like Roy Williams who are
incompetent in coverage (and I’m a Cowboys fan, so I can say that). I keep 2
SSs on my roster.

K: I would rather have a consistent kicker than a flashy, long range one, so I
use the Pinpoint Accuracy philosophy. I keep one kicker on my roster.

P: Pretty easy to go with the Big Boot philosophy. I only keep 1 punter.

---------------
M. TE-FB Cheat
---------------

There is a way to exploit the game. You can, in the roster screen, edit the
position on any player (within reason). For instance, you can’t make a DT a
QB. You can, however, make a TE a FB. Many people use this exploit to change
Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gates, Dallas Clark, and other good TEs to FBs and then
trade like a 6th round pick to get them. They then go back into the roster,
switch them back to TEs, and trade them away for 1st-rounders. Repeat as
necessary. Sometimes a team won’t trade the player after you switch them to FB
(Jason Witten, for example), but it’s still very profitable when it does work.
If you want to do this, then feel free to do so. I personally do not, I just
felt that I should include it in this guide for others who might.

Re: Cover 2 Philosophy

Love the defensive setup, but I'd rather have balanced for wr and rb as well as the quarterback. Yeah speed is nice but I would rather have someone who can catch the ball in a passing game. I suppose I play with sliders intended at realism so the catch rate is dropped significantly. I see potential of 89 and I'm like oh yeah, but when their potential catch is 60, doesn't do me any good for him as a wr.
