    Jacksonville Jaguars

Let the haters hate, gentlemen. We are on the verge of a good season, if I have felt the winds of change correctly! Let's get it started with some Derrick Harvey news:

Your best source for quality Jacksonville Jaguars news, rumors, analysis, stats and scores from the fan perspective.

"Night and day. He’s a different player. I’m seeing technique in him I hadn’t seen previously. That’s for sure because he was not a technique guy. I’m seeing quickness in him. I’m seeing a spark in him. At times, he has looked like the dominant player you would expect from the eighth pick of the draft."
    How about some Mike Thomas?

The Jacksonville Jaguars are a professional football team based in Jacksonville, Florida. The Jaguars compete in the NFL as a member of the AFC South division.

“Mike’s been making big plays. Mike’s determined to take a step forward. He’s an explosive player. He’s fighting for that role right now,” Del Rio said of Thomas and his attempt to secure the “number two receiver” designation.
Good stuff. I'll keep posting news as I find it, and hopefully there'll be some discussion in here.

    Garrard gets hot:

I had to double check and make sure I didn't miss something, but I watched Garrard complete every pass during a team early in practice during red-zoen drills. He threw to Mike Thomas and Mike Sims-Walker and little dump-offs to Maurice Jones-Drew and Rashad Jennings.

At another point during practice, there was also a deep touchdown pass later in the day that looked to be a 50-yarder to Marcedes Lewis.

"When we were in our team periods, it was great," Garrard said. "The guys were running great routes. O-line was blocking for me and making plays. When you get down to the green zone, money zone, what we're calling it, you gotta be able to make those plays. If i just put the ball where my receivers are -- they keep telling me just throw it to their zipcode -- so if I do that they'll make the plays for me."

      From today's Ask Vic:

Were there any players that really jumped out at you during the two-day scrimmage with the Falcons besides Garrard?

Vic: There were a lot of players that jumped out at me in good ways: Terrance Knighton was dominant. Mike Thomas was, as I said, best in class. Zach Miller and Marcedes Lewis were every bit the equal of Tony Gonzalez and Justin Peelle. Scott Starks and Derek Cox made a lot of plays. Rashad Jennings caught everything. Kassim Osgood caught the ball better than I had seen him catch it at any time since spring practices began. Kirk Morrison and Larry Hart made impressive tackles for loss. Justin Durant and Sean Considine intercepted passes and Anthony Smith nearly intercepted a pass on a play in which he broke on the ball beautifully.
The thing that jumps out to me is Zach Miller getting compared to Tony Gonzalez. Very good things.

        Inactive players for tonight's game:

The Jaguars are resting defensive end Aaron Kampman for their first preseason game, being extra cautious with his rehabilitation from ACL surgery last fall.

Kampman is one of nine players who are inactive for tonight's preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The others are LB Daryl Smith, DE Aaron Morgan, OT Eben Britton, OT Eugene Monroe, WR Jarett Dillard, DE Austen Lane, DT Tyson Alualu and DT D'Anthony Smith. TE Earnest Wilford is sitting out tonight, too.

Jordan Black will start for Monroe, Paul McQuistan for Britton, Jeremy Mincey for Kampman, Atiyyah Ellison for Alualu and Russell Allen for Daryl Smith.

If Garrard continues the poor play and McCown continues to play like he did last night, camp could be interesting. Garrard has 1 year at most left on the team, but it could be cut short it Luke can play like he did last night against the 1s.

Whoever is playing QB is going to have to step it up or it is going to be a long season.

I thought Luke was playing against Philly's 2nd squad. Was he really playing against their starters? If so, that changes my opinion on how Luke did from great to phenomenal.

We didn't see the full potential of the defense since we had the starters on the line out, and we didn't have our starting tackles. And it's only the first preseason game, so I'm not going to start worrying about the season until later.

I think the Jags will make great strides as a team, but the strength of the division could be a problem.

Looks like they were spreading the field a lot more and I expect some nice things in the passing game (as long as Garrard can make some throws). Thomas and Miller will be great weapons to complement Sims-Walker and Lewis in the passing game. Nice to see Williamson use his speed too last night.

Giggas, pretty sure Vic wasn't comparing Miller to Gonzalez, just that the combo of Lewis and Miller is comparable to Gonzalez and Peelle. I have high hopes for Miller, but he's not a hall of fame TE yet.

Yes Luke was playing against the 2s. If he plays like that against 1s, Garrard won't be on the team.

Both lines were missing starters. The OL didn't look good, but they didn't get the QBs killed, so they did ok for not having the starting OTs in the game. The DL didn't get any sacks, but they made the QB at least move. Players were in the backfield, so that is better than last year.

Let's be real here.Houston Texans running back Arian Foster and Arizona Cardinals strong safety Adrian Wilson are not going to win MVP honors in the NFL this season.

Garrard at 9... which is pretty cool. He does hold a tie in the league for passing TDs. Didn't throw a pick either, which was very impressive.

                    Ugh.

Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio oddly ended any chance for a quarterback controversy in Jacksonville by playing backup Luke McCown during Sunday's loss to San Diego.

Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio oddly ended any chance for a quarterback controversy in Jacksonville by playing backup Luke McCown during Sunday's loss to San Diego.

McCown was hurt during his brief appearance and will miss the rest of the season because of a torn ACL, Del Rio revealed on Monday.
There goes that. Who's the backup now? PFT says Brett Ratliff is the new backup. I know what you were thinking... who?

Anyone else out there on FA or through trades anyone would like? I'd like to try to swing a trade for Tony Pike, personally, although I wouldn't be opposed to seeing if we can pick someone up in the draft (Andrew Luck?).

Alright, so the season has changed a bit since San Diego, and not looking too bad (at .500 at the bye is probably the best we could have asked for).

                      Good summary thus far:

                      http://www.jaguars.com/news/article.aspx?id=9458

At midseason, the Jaguars are 4-4 and everything is on the table. With a second-half run, the franchise, the coach, the quarterback, the GM and the town might all have reason to celebrate at season’s end. Should the Jaguars falter in the second half of the season, however, doubt would, again, dominate the picture.Yes, it’s a good story because it has real-life drama to it. It’s a drama that began the day after last season ended. Let’s go back and look at the important dates that shaped this season.
                      A good read.

Aaron Kampman has torn his ACL, jaguars.com reports:

                        http://www.jaguars.com/news/article.aspx?id=9490

The Jaguars have lost defensive end and star pass-rusher Aaron Kampman for the rest of the season. Kampman sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament to his “good” knee during practice on Thursday.
Devastating. The defense wasn't necessarily good this season, but Kampman was a bright spot. Looks like the hopes of a winning season are gone for J-Ville.

Damn man that sucks. Was casually following him this year as I wanted to see how he would look going back to the 4-3 and from the few times I had seen of him, he was making the adjustment just fine.

Now I'm not even sure if he'll even get to play at THAT level again since he's basically blown out both of his knees and is already creeping up on the wrong side of 30, if he isn't already there.

Plus, even though J-Ville signed him to a 4 year contract... they have a ton of young, up-and-coming defensive line talent ready to take his spot. Here's what the defensive line could be looking like at times against Houston (Harvey's starting, but I'm not sure that it's a good idea):

                              Mincey/Lane - Knighton - Alualu - Hart

Hart, Lane, and Alualu are rookies, Knighton has got a year of experience, and Mincey is the veteran of that lineup, with 3 years of experience.

I think it's pretty obvious that Harvey ain't coming back, and Knighton/Alualu is a new combo that's going to stick. Hart and Lane, along with Aaron Morgan are all going to be one year vets... can Kampman keep his job against younger talent after blowing out a knee?
