BACO RATON, Fla. -- With 0:03 left Florida Atlantic (0-4, 0-2) kicker Mitch Anderson would attempt a 43 yard field goal for the win, but would miss it by less than a inch.
And Middle Tennessee-State's (4-0, 1-0) would stay perfect.
"We gave Mitch a chance of winning the game and it backed fire, its simple of that." Said coach Greg Patterson. "If it goes down to something like this again, we're going have to hope we get couple of yards shorter."
The game was dominated by defense. In a way you could say Florida Atlantic's defense played better than Middle Tennessee-State's. As the Blue Raiders got into the 20 6 times, and all five scores in the red-zone equaled into a field goal. The other was an interception on the team's very first drive.
"Our defense just played simply amazing, they wasn't going to allow them [Blue Raiders] into the end-zone for a touchdown."
The Blue Raiders, however, did only give up 286 yards compared to their 383 yards.
Stephen Curtis didn't have flashy stats. but did enough to give his a team a chance of winning. Completing 18 of 29 passes for 161, a touchdown, and most importantly no turnovers.
The whole FAU team did not turnover the ball once, which is huge as the team had turned it over 11 times before, but only once against South Florida last week.
This is also the first game this season that the Owls scored in double digits with 13 points, before 7 being the highest.
Defensive end Shalom Ogbonda harassed quarterback Logan Kilgore all day and would tie the school record for sacks in a game with 3.
After Kilgore interception and poor overall first quarter performance; He turned it around completing 24 of 31 passes in the final three quarters. He finished 27 for 39 with 242 yards and a interception.
Florida Atlantic would take their fist lead of the season early in the second quarter when Curtis hit his tight end Nexon Dorvilus for a 2 yard touchdown. Florida Atlantic would then make a 33 yard field goal with 0:33 left till halftime to take a 10-6 lead. But MTSU got into the red-zone before halftime and would make their third field goal as time expired.
FAU would reclaim the lead after an another MTSU field goal early in the fourth.

brutal. what a terrible way to lose.
Yeah, I was literally like I'm going to finally win a game, and then he misses a freaking 43 yard field goal. Thank God he is a senior, because he can't make anything from 40+ yards. Oh well, overall that was a really fun game to play just because defensive battles like that don't happen often.
I really can't believe I didn't allow a touchdown once that game, I mean they went into the red-zone 6 times!
HOUSTON, TX. -- Stephen Curtis went down with an injury early, but Quez Johnson was still able to lead Florida Atlantic (1-4, 1-2) to their first victory of the season, over Rice 33-16.
This win also marks the first victory of Greg Patterson's very young coaching career.
"This is a great feeling, it's awesome to say you have won a game in div-1 football." Said coach Patterson to reporters after the game.
He also said that Curtis will be good to go next week against UAB. "Curtis suffered a strained pectoral, but he'll be fine, and will be good to go next week, unless anything drasticly changes."
Before the quarterback's injury, he was having a great game. Picking apart the Owl's secondary having 167 passing yards in first quarter and having 190 in total. He also threw for a touchdown and an interception, that touchdown being a big part of his yardage. Halfback Martese Jackson would catch a screen pass and would take it to the house from 77 yards.
Jackson would come mid way though the second and did enough to keep FAU's lead up 3 scores. He only had pass the ball 9 times, completing 6 of those passes for 55 yards. He did have a big part of the team's rushing yards, running for 89 yards off 10 carries.
Curtis wasn't the only injury that occurred for FAU Receiver Marcus Cunningham would hit hard after a catch and it is reported his ribs are broken, he is looking to miss a couple of weeks.
Despite being down by two or more scores for most the game, Rice (2-2, 0-1) did not want to pass the ball. Only passing it 8 times, completing only 3 of passes.
But, when you're averaging 6.2 yards a carry on the ground and your star halfback is averaging nearly 10 yards a carry it would be hard to not run the ball. However, the running game can only do so much and it costed them.
Rice halfback Charles Ross ran for 186 yards and a touchdown off 19 carries.
Mitch Anderson redeemed himself this week, making all four field goals that he kicked. Which gave him player of the game honors.
Anderson would open the game off for FAU with a field goal early in the first. Little bit later in the first, halfback Jackson would catch a pass off of a screen and run in for a 77 yard touchdown.
Anderson would kick his third field goal of the game as time expired at halftime to give his Owls a 16-3 lead entering halftime.
Cre'Von LeBanic would intercept a pass off of a screen play and return it to the house for a 52 yard touchdown within the first 40 seconds of the second half. Rice, however, would fight back scoring 10 unanswered points to bring the score down to 23-13.
But, A touchdown by halfback Antonio Washington mid-way through the fourth quarter would put the game way for Florida Atlantic.
FAU will travel to Legion Field next week to play the UAB Blazers. Which is a very winnable game of for the Owls.

Got your first win. Now maybe you can string some together.
Yeah, it feels nice to win a game after four straight losses, lol. But, I don't know if we're be able to win whole a lot more. UAB is a very winnable game, but I have Marshall and Auburn after them. Then I have Tulane and Southern Miss which are toss ups, and for my final two games I have New Mexico State and FIU, which I should win both of those.
I'm thinking a 4-8 or 5-7 record is possible. But I don't see a bowl game coming this year.
