Southern Miss holds off FAU with late sack
On 4th&11 with 0:14 left at USM 11, the Eagles would sack Johnson to win 33-27

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss overcame a 9 point deficit late in the third quarter and scored 17 unanswered points starting in the third quarter. Florida Atlantic would fight back and after forcing a 3 and out with 1:38, they would get down to the 11 with 0:14 left, but Southern Miss would overwhelm the offensive line and Will Freeman would make the game winning sack.

Senior quarterback Cole Weeks led the Golden Eagles (2-3, 1-1 Conference-USA) twice in the comeback with 7 and 8 yard touchdown passes. He also threw a 7 yard touchdown Cooper Harrington early in the second quarter. Weeks was very productive throwing, having 349 yards through the air, 3 touchdowns, and a lone interception. Despite only having 33 yards rushing he made a couple big plays late for first down with his legs.

Harrington was Week's main target, catching 8 passes for 103 yards and a score.

Florida Atlantic quarterback Quez Johnson had a nice amount of yardage with 311 and averaged 16.3 yards a pass. But threw 3 interceptions and a very costly heading late into the game, resulting a Southern Miss field goal, which made it a two score game, instead of one. He did throw 2 touchdowns, Jenson Stoshak and Marcus Cunningham were the receivers to catch the passes.

Alex Deleon made up a big part of that yardage, despite only having 3 catches. Deleon caught two of those passes for 40+ yards. The first one being 42 and the second was 47 yards. He had 103 yards receiving.

"That is a tough way to lose, we had control of the game until the final minutes and had a chance of winning it in the final seconds." Said head coach Greg Patterson.

Antonio Washington had another great game, rushing for 117 yards off only 15 carries (7.8 average) and a touchdown. FAU's quarterback Johnson started the game off with a 20 yard run, but being sacked 6 times brought his total all the way down to -29 yards.

Florida Atlantic started the game off fast scoring in 5 plays with a 16 yard touchdown pass from Johnson to Stoshak, after forcing a 3 and out. Southern Miss would kick two 20 yard field goals in the final 2:00 minutes of the first quarter.

Antonio Washington open up the second quarter with a 1 yard touchdown run, and Southern Miss would finally score their first touchdown minutes later. Both teams would kick field goals towards halftime, with Florida Atlantic leading 17-15.

Mid-way through the third Quez Johnson connected with Cunningham on a in route to take a 24-15 lead.

But, Southern Miss would start their run scoring a touchdown with 0:45 left in the third and then an another with 7:04 left in the fourth. A field goal with 3:21 after intercepting Johnson would give the Golden Eagles a 33-24 lead. Florida Atlantic would kick another field goal with 2:05 left and Southern Miss would sack Johnson on third & fourth down to win their second game of the season.

Johnson has been sacked 14 times now in the past two games. Something that will need to be fixed if the Owls want to go far in their conference.

Yeah, it sucks to lose like that, but exciting at the same time, lol. I have a bye before playing UAB which I have a high chance of winning. After that, however, is likely going to be tough I have Louisiana Tech, Middle Tenn-State, and then Rice. I'm thinking a 6-6 record is very possible for us.

I see that BSU made a comeback against BYU. How are they doing so far this season?

Haha, yeah, Army, Navy, and Georgia Tech seem to always do great. I don't understand how the option is that good for CPU teams, lol.

Boise is doing pretty well so far, they're 4-1 currently. Their only loss came in week one against Ole Miss.

Sorry, about not updating your guys stats the last few weeks. Been busy so I haven't had time to do add that for each week. Here are some of the standouts for last week and everyone else is updated on the OP.

Danson Miller's team isn't do so well, but that hasn't slowed him down. Having nearly 500 yards.

                      verbal commitments of the year

Three recruits make the verbal commitments for Florida Atlantic on the year. The No. 62 athlete Chad Harrison, No. 51 DT Hunter Reese, and No. 59 Jeremy Fields. Florida Atlantic had competition for all three prospects.

Reese and Fields were both recruited by rival Florida International and conference rival UAB, and FIU had offered a scholarship to both players. But both prospects liked what they saw from FAU when they had visited a few weeks ago.

Florida Atlantic had a little better competition for Chad Harrison. Harrison had scholarships from Texas A&M, West Virginia, Boise State, and was recruited by Georgia and Florida State as well. Harrison has alright speed and has played mostly quarterback in his high school career. He also has seen time at receiver and in the secondary.

Hunter Reese is a big recruit for Florida Atlantic, as he could start right away for the Owls with Derek Butcher and Karl James both leaving due to graduation.

Austin Brown leads UAB to victory in shootout 45-28
A big offensive touchdown and defensive touchdown has UAB celebrating a victory

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Austin Brown threw for 338 yards and 3 touchdowns, along with a rushing TD to help his Blazers upset Florida Atlantic 45-28.

Florida Atlantic and UAB were tight for most of the game and UAB was only up 30-28 after a 11 yard touchdown pass from Quez Johnson to Alex Deleon as time expired in the third quarter.

But a 2 point lead turned into a 17 point lead in little over a minute mid-way through the fourth quarter thanks to Austin Brown throwing a perfect over the shoulder pass to J. Nelson and than a 60 yard fumble return moments later and converting the 2-pt conversion.

"We were in this game all day, but hat changed in just minutes because of a great pass by [Austin] Brown and that fumble by Johnson." Said head coach Greg Patterson. "Johnson can't take all of the blame for the fumble either, he was trying his best all day trying to avoid the pressure. But like the previous games he was getting hit almost every play and was six times."

Patterson went on about how the O-line needs to do a lot better job protecting their quarterback if they want to win many more games if any.

Brown wasn't the only player to put up huge numbers in the game. Halfback Antonio Washington had a stellar game, breaking the school record in rushing yards with 218. He also became the first player in Owl's history to surpass the 200 yard mark. Washington averaged 10.9 yards a carry and broke off a 70 yard touchdown in the second quarter.

Doug Brady only seen 5 carries, but would break off a 25 yard touchdown run, after Washington had ran 33 yards on the previous play.

Because of the rushing attack being dominant for the whole game, quarterback Quez Johnson didn't have to pass it very much. He had only passes it 11 times entering the fourth quarter and was 9 for 11 and 2 touchdowns, his only interception was on the final play of the second quarter with a hail-mary attempt. He finished 11 for 18 with 134 yards.

UAB started the game off with a long almost 4 minute touchdown drive, the touchdown play being a 11 yard touchdown pass from Brown to his receiver Scott. Florida Atlantic started off with 6 rushing attempts and on the seventh play FAU would run a play action and Johnson would hit a wide open Jenson Stoshak on a post route for a 44 yard touchdown.

UAB would score a field goal with a minute left in the first and Brown would threw his second touchdown pass to tight end Kennard Backman to take a 17-7 lead. Backman was making big catch after big catch, leading both teams with 8 catches for 138 yards and a touchdown.

Antonio Washington would break off a 70 yard touchdown run only a few seconds later to cut to 17-14. But Brown led the Blazers down the field once again before halftime and score on a 4 yard run.

Florida Atlantic once again would cut the lead by 3 with Doug Brady diving into the end-zone after a 25 yard run. UAB would go onto score 2 field goals from 38 and 23 yards out to take a 30-21 lead. Two scores in a few moments mid-way through the fourth quarter would be the game clincher as UAB won their third game of the season and first in conference play.

UAB had 11 more first downs and a lot more yards with 512 to 379 by Florida Atlantic, and ran 76 plays. While FAU only ran 55 plays. But the Owls broke off quite bit of big plays to make the game tight until the final minutes.

The loss marks the second straight for FAU after winning three straight to make the Owls 3-4 on the season.

Research Note: Alfred Morris held the previous school rushing yards record with 198 on 2011. Antonio Washington was also the first halfback to surpass the 200 yard mark in school history.

Washington leads rushing attack and Owls to victory over Bulldogs
Florida Atlantic dominated the T.O.P and ran over Louisiana Tech

RUSTON, LA. -- The Florida Atlantic dominated the T.O.P, having the ball for 26 minutes to nearly 10 minutes for Louisiana Tech.

Another key part for Florida Atlantic in the win was Antonio Washington having another solid game and Doug Brady having a couple of nice runs. Washington finished with 132 yards and 2 touchdowns rushing off 25 carries. Brady averaged 10 yards a carry with 80 yards rushing.

Florida Atlantic started the game off inside the 25 after a long drive. But on 2nd and long Quez Johnson would throw his first of two interceptions in the game. The Owls would have another chance in the 25 and this time Johnson would throw a perfect to CB/ATH Darnell Martin on a deep slant for a 20 yard touchdown.

The Owls 7-0 lead wouldn't last long as Louisiana Tech quickly tied it up within 6 seconds of the second with a 9 yard touchdown pass on 3rd & goal. Little over three minutes later, however, Florida Atlantic took the lead back and would keep it for rest of the game thanks to Washington getting into the end-zone for his first touchdown.

The Bulldogs marched down field to open up the third quarter, but would have to settle for a field goal. The Owls would then have a long four minute drive to take a 21-10 lead with Quez Johnson running into the end-zone.

With a now 21-13 lead early in the fourth, Florida Atlantic would have another long drive going for close to five minutes and Antonio Washington running in for the game sealing touchdown with 2:49 left to take a 28-13 lead. Louisiana Tech would score with 1:22 left with a 14 yard touchdown pass from Scotty Young, but failing the 2-pt conversion would make the score 2 possessions.

"I'm really proud of our guys, we came into this week on a two game losing streak and two byes in the past three weeks, which felt like close to a month." Said head coach Greg Patterson. "We came into this game knowing we needed to give [Quez] Johnson time, so we choose to run the ball, alot. Which isn't a bad idea if we got guys who are hot right now."

Scotty Young was making all of the throws, when he wasn't throwing it deep. 22 for 27 passing overall passing for 238 yards, 2 touchdowns, and an interception. But was 0-4 including the interception when passing over 20 yards however.

Along with controlling the T.O.P, Florida Atlantic had 11 more first downs with 26, and having 76 plays to the Bulldogs 42.

Florida Atlantic will have a tough game next week as they play at 6-1 Middle Tennessee.

Florida Atlantic stuns MTSU with last second TD to win 48-47
With 0:14 left Quez Johnson found receiver Jake Anderson
wide open in the end-zone for the game winning touchdown

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Middle Tennessee had just taken their first lead of the game with 0:50 left in the game thanks to a 58 yard bomb from Grammer to Whatley. That lead only lasted a few seconds, as Quez Johnson led his team down field and got rushed out of the pocket, and found receiver Jake Anderson open, the rest is history. Florida Atlantic stunned Middle Tennessee-State 48-47.

It was a game of big plays and a lot of yardage. Both teams combing for 1,262 yards of total offense, close to 900 through the air.

It was career days for Quez Johnson, and record setting days for Antonio Washington and Williams Dukes. Washington broke the school's rushing record again with 220 yards rushing, Washington had broken the reocrd previously only two games ago against UAB. Washington averaged an amazingly nearly 13 yards a carry (17 attempts) and broke off 4 20+ yard runs, two of those being for 50+. His first 50+ yard run was a 51 yard touchdown.

Dukes, who has been quiet all season, broke the school record for receiving yards in a game with 233. Along with breaking the record he became the first Owl to surpass 200 yards in a game. Dukes caught 2 touchdown passes as well, both coming in the first quarter, finishing with 9 receptions and averaging 25.8 yards a catch. Having three catches of at least 40 yards or more, one being a 67 yard touchdown.

Johnson has Dukes to thank for most of his yards passing, 444 to be exact and 4 touchdowns. Also running in for a touchdown and throwing an interception.

Jake Anderson who caught the game winning touchdown had 7 catches for 73 yards and 2 touchdowns. Jenson stoshak also made a couple big catches, finishing with 3 receptions for 77 yards.

Florida Atlantic started the game off hot on offense and defense, Williams Dukes having 2 & 67 yards touchdown catches with less than 1:20 in the first quarter to have an early 14-3 lead.

Washington would then break off his first 50+ yard run for a touchdown to give the Owls a 21-6 lead. Middle Tennessee would kick their third field goal, but FAU would go right down the field and Johnson connected with Anderson for his first touchdown reception to take a 28-9 lead. With it looking like FAU might take full control of the game early, Grammer quickly led the Blue Raiders down field and scored their first touchdown to make the score 28-16.

That score quickly turned to 28-23 as Quez Johnson threw an interception at mid-field with 0:05 left till halftime, and Grammer would chuck the ball in the end-zone and somehow Christian Collis would comedown with it, to make the deficit only 5 points entering halftime.

After a Florida Atlantic field goal to open up the third quarter, Middle Tennessee State would take their time and Grammer would run into the end-zone from 15 yards out, they, however, would fail the 2-pt conversion and the Owls had only a 31-29 lead. With 1:38 left in the third quarter Quez Johnson ran into to the end-zone to give the Owls a 2 possession lead once again at 38-29.

MTSU quickly made it 38-36 in the first 30 seconds of the fourth, both teams would kick field goals inside the opponents 10 yard lines to make it 41-39. With 0:50 left Grammer threw the deep pass to Whatley and converted the 2-pt conversion to make it 47-41. Johnson, however, had other plans than losing as he marched the team down-field to win the game with a 8 yard touchdown pass.

"I'm pretty much speech-less right now." Said head coach Greg Patterson after the game. "All of our guys played great. [Williams] Dukes, [Antonio] Washington, and [Quez] Johnson had stellar games, and Johnson took full control of the game in the final seconds to win us this game."

Johnson wasn't the only quarterback to have a stellar performance. MTSU quarterback Austin Grammer came up big for his Blue Raiders as well. Completing 82% of his passing (39 for 47) for 413 yards, 3 touchdowns, an interception, and even a rushing touchdown.

But the game came down to whoever had the ball last and it shown 50 seconds was too much time for the Owls.
