The Mavericks were in cruise control for much of the game, backed by a huge 38-12 performance in the second quarter. However, after a 15-5 run late in the fourth, the Spurs almost made an unlikely comeback but fell short, losing 99-115.
DeMarcus Cousins continued his stellar start to the season, finishing with 28 points on 11/14 shooting. Cousins, earlier tweeted "Never forget", alluding to the Mavericks first-round exit last year to the Spurs. He definitely did not forget as he along with John Wall set the tone early. Wall finished with 27 points and 11 assists while Harrison Barnes also scored 25 points.
Dallas was magnificent on the defensive end, racking up 17 steals, 8 blocks and forcing the Spurs to 19 turnovers. After the game, Rick Carlisle addressed the media, applauding his team's efforts, "I was really proud of our guys tonight, particularly on the defensive end. Even though it's just one game, we need the same kind of effort every night to start developing habits. But tonight is definitely an encouraging sign."
