Cousins' big night narrowly gives Dallas victory over Sacramento

    April 10, 2020 | by NBA News

The Mavs led by as much as 18 points in the first quarter thanks to a dominating performance from Boogie who had a double double in the first half. However, that was all erased when the Kings' bench outplayed the Mavericks' bench. Consequently, Rick Carlisle quickly pulled his starters back in, and from there, it was game on.

Despite shooting 58% for the duration of the game, Dallas simply couldn't stop Sacramento from crashing the boards, giving up 24 offensive rebounds as well as committing 17 turnovers. Frank Ntilikina was instrumental in the pick-n-roll with the Sacramento bigs, racking up 17 assists, while Kevin Love and Georgios Papagiannis both recorded a double double.

But it was all DeMarcus Cousins for the Mavericks as he finished with 38 points, 17 rebounds, 6 steals and 3 blocks. With the Kings failing to score down the stretch, Boogie iced the game by hitting a pair of clutch free throws to further extend the lead. Perhaps playing against his former team sparked extra motivation for Cousins, however when asked after the game, he simply smirked and replied "Nah man, it's just another game in the season."

With tonight's win, the Dallas Mavericks have officially locked a spot in the Playoffs and are currently seeded third with a record of 8-5.

Lakers test Mavericks as Playoffs loom

      April 14, 2020 | by NBA News

In a high octane game where both teams traded shots, it was the Mavericks that came out on top, defeating the Lakers 128-121.

The Lakers took a whopping 100 field goal attempts while the Mavericks went to the foul line 42 times. John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins combined for 59 points whilst Denzel Valentine scored a season-high 25 points off the bench along with 8 assists. His spark led to coach Carlisle riding with the hot hand, electing to play Valentine the entire fourth quarter over Hardaway Jr. who was held scoreless.

With tonight's victory, the Mavs post a 9-5 record for the third straight year and will be seeded third in this years' Western Conference Playoffs.

For Los Angeles, it's been yet another disappointing season for Laker nation, failing to make the postseason as the Blake Griffin era continues to be an epic fail thus far.

It's crazy to see so many teams at 7-7. Another solid season for you and your Mavs bro, good luck in the playoffs! It's really weird to see the Spurs not in the playoffs haha

Yeah they've been really inconsistent from season-to-season. The new kids (Dejounte Murray, Hamidou Diallo and Thomas Bryant) haven't quite panned out yet. But Kawhi is still killin' it!

              First-Round Recap

              April 17, 2020 | by NBA News

              (3) Dallas Mavericks vs. (6) Memphis Grizzlies

The Mavericks ran away with the game in the second half, outscoring the Grizzlies 55-40.

John Wall was phenomenal, leading with 31 points, 11 assists and 4 steals. It was also welcome sighting for Harrison Barnes who drained 5 three-pointers, finishing with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Barnes had been struggling throughout the regular season, shooting below 30% from deep. During the postgame conference interview, Wall stated the encouragement he keep persisting on Barnes. "I told him to just keep letting it fly. I don't care if his 0/30. If he's open, take the shot."

Furthermore, Rick Carlisle addressed the media, citing the effort by his team tonight and praising them after having blown the lead against Memphis in their last outing in the regular season. "All game I was reminding them of what happened last time. I told them to not get ahead of themselves and take it one possession at a time."

              (1) Golden State Warriors vs. (8) Los Angeles Clippers

Despite the individual brilliance from Chris Paul (30 points, 6 rebounds, 10 assists, 8 assists), it was not enough to overcome to offensive juggernaut of the Warriors with Steph Curry pouring in 45 points. MVP Kevin Durant also dropped in a casual 24 points as Golden State made light work of the Clippers en route to get back into the Finals.

              (2) Portland Trail Blazers vs. (7) New Orleans Pelicans

Despite recording 16 blocks as a team, the Trail Blazers couldn't overcome the onslaught from the Pelicans as they get the upset win over the number 2 seed.

Anthony Davis finished with a game-high 29 points, 8 assists and a pair of steals and blocks.

              (4) Oklahoma City Thunder vs. (5) Utah Jazz

In a fierce division rivalry, it was Utah's backcourt that got the job done with Markelle Fultz, Dante Exum and Josh Richardson all combining for 68 points.

Unfortunately for Westbrook, it's yet another disappointing postseason run after a magnificent regular season performance.

              (1) Washington Wizards vs. (8) Chicago Bulls

It was the Bradley Beal vs. Jimmy Butler show as both players scored 37 and 54 points respectively. However, Jimmy simply could not outscore the entire Wizards squad, with 6 different players scoring in double digits for Washington.

              (2) Milwaukee Bucks vs. (7) Philadelphia 76ers

There was never a doubt that the 76ers were a lot better than their record shows. Unfortunately for the Bucks, they drew the short straw as their bounce back season comes to an end.

Joel Embiid was on fire from deep, knocking down 6 and finishing with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Ben Simmons also missed out on a triple double with 10 points, 9 rebounds and 12 assists.

LeBron James triple-doubled with 15 points, 15 rebounds, and 14 assists while Kyrie Irving led the scoring with 23 points along with 8 assists.

Despite not getting the win from Playoff virgins, Luka Doncic, Lawrence Howard and Sheldon Overton, it was definitely a huge learning experience for the young Hornets core.

Miami gets their very first postseason win, ironically, sans the Dwyane Wade era whilst he was playing for them.

Goran Dragic scored a game-high 25 points while Rodney Hood finished with 23 points and 10 assists.

For Detroit, they were woeful from the charity stripe, making just 18/35 which ultimately was their Achilles heel in the loss.

                (3) Dallas Mavericks vs. (7) New Orleans Pelicans

In a dominating performance on the road, the Pelicans have upset the Mavericks, winning 119-105.

Despite Anthony Davis struggling throughout game with foul troubles, Isaac Bonga and Marques Bolden picked up the slack, both contributing with 17 and 14 points respectively. Buddy Hield led the team in scoring with 24 points as the Mavericks had no answers on the defensive end against the Pelicans, allowing 60 points in the paint and 17 second chance points.

For Dallas, DeMarcus Cousins was doing work early with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Unfortunately, his night was cut short in the second quarter, suffering a broken nose. With Boogie done, the Mavs tried to match the Pelicans' size and played A.J. Hammons at the center. The move appeared to have backfired with the big man shooting just 1/4 from within the basket. Harrison Barnes also struggled from the field after an impressive outing in the previous round as he made just 5/17.

In the post-game conference, a disappointed Mark Cuban blasted his team's lackluster performance. "We sucked. I don't care if DeMarcus was out or not. We flat out stunk tonight on both ends of the floor."

When asked if there'd be any drastic changes during the offseason, Cuban simply replied "We'll see. But we're definitely going to take a long, hard look and re-assess the team from top-down."

                      Chris Bosh announces retirement

                      May 12, 2020 | by NBA News

In a short video via UNINTERRUPTED, Chris Bosh announced his retirement from the game at the age of 36.

A career spanning from 2003-2020, Bosh leaves behind career averages of 19.0 PPG, 8.4 RPG, and 1.0 BPG in 907 games played. Bosh started his career drafted by the Toronto Raptors in 2003. In the summer of 2010, he joined LeBron James and Dwyane Wade in Miami to form the 'Big 3' where they would later win two NBA titles. In 2015-2016, Bosh unfortunately suffered a series of blood clots that shortened his season, sidelining him from the game for several years. He later made his return to the game last season, signing with the Dallas Mavericks where he played an integral role off the bench.

Some of his accomplishments in his career include 11x NBA All-Star as well as a 2nd Team All-NBA selection back in 2007.

During the video stream, Bosh cited his decision to walk away from the game was all about family and the desire to move back to Miami where they still hold residence. Bosh also thanked Mark Cuban and the Dallas Mavericks for giving him the chance to play the game he loved one last time.

Below is the full list of player retirements as announced by the league officials yesterday morning.

                        July 5, 2020 | by NBA News

The Sacramento Kings will finally have some good fortunes coming their way after landing the #1 pick in this years' 2020 NBA Draft. The Kings have been miserable ever since losing DeMarcus Cousins to free agency back in 2018.

With an 18.1% chance, Sacramento was able to secure the top spot while the Hawks made the biggest movement, jumping from 8th to 2nd place.

This years' draft class includes several talented players with North Carolina power forward, Raymar Benjamin, ULCA guard Isaac Bishop, and German prospect Erik Wright leading the pack as the top candidates.

Below is the full breakdown of the draft order and the lottery odds prior.

Coaching Changes: Grizzlies re-sign Logan Schmidt

                          July 12, 2020 | by NBA News

It was a no-brainer move by Memphis as they successfully bring back Logan Schmidt on a 4-year deal.

Schmidt, who overtook the 1-4 Grizzlies, at the time, back in December, was instrumental in reviving the team's season, guiding them to a 7-2 record. Unfortunately they were knocked out of the first-round to Dallas, but nonetheless, management were fully committed to Schmidt to see what he can do in Year 2 and beyond.

In other coaching news, it has also been a busy day with a series of coaching transactions.

                          Here is the full breakdown:
                          • Knicks re-sign Frank Vogel
                          • Pacers re-sign Terry Stotts
                          • Trail Blazers re-sign Kevin McHale
                          • Nuggets re-sign Mike Malone
                          • Grizzlies re-sign Logan Schmidt

It was a surprising move by the Sacramento Kings who selected another center in Elliot Newble when they already have promising big man, Georgios Papagiannis, although the latter is set to become a restricted free agent.

Newble will join a Sacramento squad consisting of other young talents such as Frank Ntilikina and Malachi RIchardson, alongside Kevin Love, who the Kings acquired last season. It is yet unknown whether coach Mike D'Antoni will bring Newble along slowly or throw him right into the water, particularly if the Kings decide to let Papagiannis walk in free agency.

North Carolina big man, Raymar Benjamin was selected second by the Atlanta Hawks, who immediately traded Eric Bledsoe the following pick in order to acquire the next #3 pick to select Erik Wright, who looks poised to pair with fellow German, Dennis Schroder in the backcourt.

During the draft, there were a flurry of trades. Below is the full breakdown of deals that went down during the draft along with the draft selections from each team.

Rockets trade: Patrick Beverley, 2021 first-round pick (Top 3 protected)

After last season's disappointing second-round exit, the Mavericks made some shrewd signings to address some areas of concerns that arose, particularly during the postseason. First they bolstered their bench, and second, added more firepower from the three-point line.

Dallas was fortunate enough to land Marcus Smart despite the Chicago Bulls offering him a more lucrative offer to retain him. During his press conference, Smart indicated his desire to compete for a championship as the main factor in his signing. "I want to win man. I believe this team has the potential to do that and I believe I can be the difference maker in making that a reality."

Furthermore, Dallas controversially brought back Mark Cuban's former BFF, Chandler Parsons. Despite some mixed reactions from Mav fans, owner Mark Cuban reiterated during the press conference and stated "Look, I hate the way it happened. But it is what it is. Me and Chandler have been in regular contact even after he left and we both understand the business side of things. Regardless, we believe that he can be a huge lift for this team. He's still a pretty darn good player as we saw last season with Houston."

With new players coming in, unfortunately Dallas had to let go of its' own free agents in order to accommodate for room. As a result, the Mavericks simply could afford to keep Denzel Valentine, who was a huge part of Dallas' second unit last season. He signed an attractive contract offer with the Brooklyn Nets for 3yr/$38M deal with a team option for which Dallas decided not to match.

With another gold medal victory in the 2020 Olympics, can Boogie bring some of that fortune to Dallas this season?   |   Bobby Karalla-USA TODAY Sports

With the Mavs 2020-21 schedule released on yesterday morning, Dallas will be entering their 41st season in the NBA at home against the Portland Trail Blazers. They will then hit the road to San Antonio to face the neighboring rival Spurs.

Mav fans will want to mark January 9 on their calendars as that will be the first time they face the New Orleans Pelicans, who defeated the Mavs in last season's Conference Semifinals. Dallas will then head to San Francisco to take on the three-peat champions, Golden State Warriors.

The Mavericks will conclude their regular season at home, hosting against the Denver Nuggets on April 8.

You can see the full schedule below.
