    Conference Semifinals Recap

    April 18, 2021 | by NBA News

    (3) Dallas Mavericks vs. (4) Memphis Grizzlies

In a game of runs, Dallas led by as much as 13 points in the first half. However, Memphis made a big push during the third quarter, trailing by just 1 with 12 minutes to go. But it didn't stop from there as Mike Conley was flaming hot, knocking two triples to start the fourth quarter and giving the Grizzlies the lead for the first time. With 5 minutes to go, Memphis was leading by 9 points before some crucial defensive stops brought Dallas back in it to lead by 1 with two minutes remaining.

From there, it was the superstars that came to play, as both teams traded clutch buckets. Trailing by 1 with the shot clock off, Memphis' inbound pass was picked off by DeMarcus Cousins who made a huge steal. The Grizzlies had no choice but to foul Cousins immediately and send him to the line. Unfortunately for Dallas, Cousins only made 1 of 2, thus giving them a 2 point lead with 10 seconds remaining. As the clock winded down, Dallas was denying the 3-ball at will, forcing Mike Conley to put up a tough jumper from 20 feet.

It feel short, as Dallas came away with the victory, defeating Memphis 108-106.

It was a record breaking performance from Cousins and Wall, as they both posted franchise highs in rebounds and assists for the postseason. Cousins finished with 24 points and 22 rebounds while Wall tallied 20 points and 20 assists. Serge Ibaka also continued his hot shooting, scoring a team-high 27 points. Ibaka, who averaged just 11 points per game during the regular season, has found some signs of life during the postseason, averaging 20 PPG, 10 RPG, and 3 BPG. Dallas will hope that new form continues as they advance to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 2011.

During the press conference, John Wall was thrilled to finally get past the Conference Semifinals. "Man, it feels good to finally get that monkey off my back. This is new territory for me but I know the works not done yet. We've still got a long way to go and the margin for error gets smaller and smaller."

Definitely would be interesting to see Wall play his old team in the NBA Finals. Can't look past Golden State though, especially with it being a one-game series. Best of luck.

A Mavs/Wizards Final would be interesting. They gave you a key piece in Wall which helped you get DMC and you gave them the multiple 1st's to rebuild their team.

Definitely would be interesting. Would've been even better if the Wizards had a better record than the Mavericks so Wall could return back to the Verizon Center. Nonetheless, it's a tall order for Washington to overcome the 13-1 Cavaliers. We'll see if they can do it again.

Wow what a season and playoff run!! Can't believe LeBron is still dominating at 36. Crazy to see him log that many minutes at that age. Good luck against the Warriors! I wanna see your Mavs in the NBA Finals brah

                (1) Dallas Mavericks vs. (2) Golden State Warriors

It's not every day that a team can shut Golden State under 20 points for two quarters but the Mavericks did just that, leading at the half by 7 whilst limiting the Warriors to just 36 points.

Steph Curry started the game ice cold, going 0-5 before making his first bucket with 3 minutes left in the first quarter. Dallas did an outstanding job containing Golden State's arsenal of Durant, Curry and Thompson. Instead, they allowed the Warriors to force feed the ball to Joffrey Lauvergne to make something happen. He did an admirable job, finishing with 21 points and 15 rebounds, however, it was a sacrifice the Mavericks were willing to gamble so long as neither one the Warriors' big 3 went off.

By the second half, Kevin Durant and Steph Curry started to pick up some steam, finally cracking double-digit scoring. Unfortunately for them, John Wall took matters into his own hands when Golden State were starting to claw their way back. Wall scored 8 straight points to close out the third quarter and give Dallas a 5 point buffer heading into the fourth. From there, Wall kept his foot on the pedal to lead the Mavericks to their first Finals appearance since 2011. Whether it was scoring, setting up his team, or defending Curry, he was everywhere and the stat sheet showed it, with 38 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists, and 6 steals. Serge Ibaka also continued to channel his inner-Dirk, finishing with 20 points, 13 rebounds and 4 blocks.

As a Finals trip now looms ahead for the Mavs, it will be a very different scenario with Serge Ibaka and Harrison Barnes the only member of the team to have Finals experience. Assistant coach, Dirk Nowitzki, addressed the media after the gaming, urging the team to not lose focus. "I just told the guys after, don't get caught in the limelight. We'll need to be prepared mentally, and soak in every moment as they come. I mean, after all, it's the last game of the season. Focus now and enjoy the break after."

The win also snaps Golden State's incredible dominance of the Western Conference spanning since 2015. One has to wonder whether it would've been a different outcome had Draymond Green suited up. Green unfortunately was sidelined for the entire Playoffs due to a broken hand suffered on the last game of the regular season.

                (1) Cleveland Cavaliers vs. (2) Washington Wizards

Was John Wall going to face his former team in an NBA Finals? Could the Wizards possibly upset the Cavaliers again this season?

Nope. LeBron was having none of that as he carried the Cavs back into the Finals with a dominating performance, finishing with 25 points, 18 rebounds, 13 assists, and 6 steals. He clearly has stumbled across the fountain of youth.

NBA Finals: (1) Cleveland Cavaliers vs. (1) Dallas Mavericks

                    April 24, 2021 | by NBA News

In convincing fashion, the Dallas Mavericks have defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers, 99-96, to be crowned the 2021 NBA Champions!

The Mavericks got off to a strong start, holding the Cavs to just 34 points in the first half. Although Cleveland started to get it going in the second half, they simply couldn't overtake the steady Mavericks, who just kept grinding and grinding through the game.

Dallas' defense has been unreal these past few games, and there was no exceptions in this one, combining for 11 steals and 8 blocks.

Serge Ibaka, whom is set to become a free agent in July, kept up his incredible performance in the postseason, finishing with 13 points, 13 rebounds and 5 blocks. John Wall was also magnificent with 28 points and 10 assists. One could even argue that he deserved the Finals MVP trophy as well. But nonetheless, it was DeMarcus Cousins who was awarded the honors. Cousins made some clutch second-chance buckets as well as intercepting a crucial pass down the stretch that sealed the deal. He finished with 20 points, 11 rebounds and 5 steals. In his speech, Cousins thanked his teammates and fans in what has been a historical season for him thus far. "Man ... WE THE CHAMPS!!! Ahh man, I wanna give a huge shout-out to all my brothers standing behind me. We've been through hell and back but it's been worth every moment. Love you all and thank you Dallas!!"

With three of the five Dallas starters set to hit free agency, it'll be interesting to see what owner Mark Cuban does this time around. Though we may already have a clue after his blatant message to the media. "I tell you what, if I have to, I will drag Boogie's *** back to Dallas. I will handcuff myself to John if I have to. They're not going anywhere! I mean, I've learnt from my mistake the last time we won the championship. I ain't going to go through another decade of pain and suffering." Mind you, Cuban seemed to have one too many champagne during his press conference, so who knows..?

The Oklahoma City Thunder will finally have some good fortunes coming their way after landing the #1 pick in this years' 2021 NBA Draft. With an 22.4% chance, Oklahoma City was able to secure the top spot while the Hawks made the biggest movement, jumping from 6th to 3rd place.

This years' draft class includes several talented players with Houston point guard, Matthew Holland, Ohio State big man Randall Person, and Lithuanian prospect Milos Dabanovic leading the pack as the top candidates.

Below is the full breakdown of the draft order and the lottery odds prior.

It was a no-brainer that Matthew Holland was the best player in the draft. And so, the Thunder simply had to select him. But that's where things now get complicated for them. They also have another guy, named Russell Westbrook, that they'd also like to keep. With the Thunder selecting a point guard with their number 1 pick, Westbrook's decision in free agency will now surely be the hot topic of the summer.

In other news, Charlotte made a huge gamble, stunning the league by drafting Tim Potter out of Fresno State. Potter, whom was projected to go mid-late in the first round, ended up going at #2 in a very head-scratching move by Michael Jordan's Hornets owned franchise.

After learning from past mistakes, there was no way Mark Cuban was going to repeat that again after blowing up the Championship roster back in 2011.

This time around, Mark Cuban brought back its' core of John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Serge Ibaka, and even the likes of Tim Hardaway Jr., Wesley Matthews, and Tony Powers. And to put the cherry on top, they even signed LaMarcus Aldridge away from rivals, the San Antonio Spurs, whom spent 6 seasons with them. During his interview with the media, Aldridge simply stated his homecoming was to win. "I want to win man. That title is all that's missing in my career. I thought I could do that with San Antonio but unfortunately things didn't turn out that way. I mean, that's no disrespect to them at all. They're a first-class organization and I want to thank them for a wonderful 6 years, but at the same time, I ain't getting any younger and I feel that this team has the best chance at winning. I mean they proved it last season, and I hope I can be a contributor for them."

In other free agency news, the biggest headline was Russell Westbrook, whom signed with the New Orleans Pelicans. Westbrook will join Anthony Davis as possibly one of the best 1-2 punches in the league. The Western Conference battle will surely be full of fireworks this season.

With targets now on their back, can Dallas do what it takes to repeat?   |   Bobby Karalla-USA TODAY Sports

With the Mavs 2021-22 schedule released on yesterday morning, Dallas will be entering their 42nd season in Oklahoma to face the new-look Thunder.

Dallas will then raise the championship banner on November 13, hosting against the San Antonio Spurs.

On Christmas Day, all eyes will be on the Mavericks as they host the Denver Nuggets in a national televised broadcast.

The Mavs will then get their first crack at the Pelicans, with newly acquired Russell Westbrook, on January 25.

Fans will have to wait until April 7, when the Warriors come to town in a rematch of last season's Conference finals.

Dallas will then conclude their season on the road against the Los Angeles Lakers on April 11.
