NBA Finals: (1) Washington Wizards vs. (4) Golden State Warriors

        April 27, 2024 | by NBA News

In a tightly contested game, the Washington Wizards have narrowly defeated the Golden State Warriors, 118-111, to capture their first title since 1978.

With a star studded matchup, it was sixth man, Grayson Allen, that stole the show, scoring 23 points along with 6 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals as he was named the Bill Russell Finals MVP Award.

Dennis Smith Jr., complimented with 22 points and 11 assists while Enes Kanter was highly effective in his 17 minutes of action, dropping 21 points on 6/9 shooting.

Meanwhile, despite scoring 43 points from Kevin Durant, as well as 24 points and 10 assists from Stephen Curry, the Warriors fell short and part of that was the big free throw disparity, as the Wizards attempted 29 shots compared to the Warriors' 8 attempts.

Nets wins lottery, gets #1 pick

            July 4, 2024 | by NBA News

After years of suffering and vacating away their future at the hands of Billy King, Nets fans have finally rejoiced after landing the #1 pick for the first time since 2000 where they drafted Kenyon Martin.

With a 10.0% chance, the Nets were able to secure the top spot while the Rockets unluckily slipped to third place, in an otherwise, unchanged draft order.

This years' draft class includes a very intriguing amount of players, with Memphis forward, Lamond McMillan, Clemson guard, Louis Clancy, and Duke swingman, J'Covan Kennedy projected to land in the top 3.

Below is the full breakdown of the draft order and the lottery odds prior.

Coaching Changes: The Prodigal son returns; LeBron James named head coach of Cleveland Cavaliers

After a dismal season for the Cavaliers, owner Dan Gilbert announced the termination of coach Tyronn Lue. In turn, his replacement will be a familiar face in LeBron James.

Brooklyn made a surprising choice at the draft, selecting Memphis forward, Lamond McMillan with the number 1 overall pick. The Nets clearly opted to choose based on best available player rather than need. But with Dario Saric set to hit free agency, the Nets may simply be looking at a contingency plan.

Nets coach, Steve Clifford, was delighted with the choice, stating that he views McMillan as a project. "He's got all the tools to be a force in this league. Obviously we're not going to throw him right into the fire. We want to mold him and allow him to absorb as much information as possible at a steady pace."

In other news, there were a flurry of trades made by teams hoping to bolster their roster for the upcoming season. Portland made a big gamble, trading away two first round picks for Kemba Walker.

Below is the full breakdown of deals that went down during the draft along with the draft selections from each team.

Bulls trade: 6th overall pick, Maurice Harkless
Nets trade: Isaac Bonga, 2025 first-round pick (Top 10 Protected)

Clippers trade: 9th overall pick, 2026 second-round pick
Hornets trade: Isaac Tate, Karl Winston

Trail Blazers trade: 12th overall pick, 2025 first-round pick (via MIN, Top 3 Protected)
                Knicks trade: Kemba Walker

                Nuggets trade: 20th overall pick
                Warriors trade: Willy Hernangomez

                Bucks trade: 21st overall pick
Bulls trade: Malcolm Brogdon, Lucas Nogueira

                Celtics trade: 25th overall pick
                Rockets trade: Harrison Barnes

Trail Blazers trade: 2026 second-round pick
                Mavericks trade: 48th overall pick

In effort to clear cap space and go after one or two viable free agents, the Mavericks parted with Serge Ibaka to the Pacers in exchange for raw shooting guard, Kris Thompkins. Ibaka, who spent the past 7 seasons in Dallas, has steadily seen his minutes and production declined. Last season, at the age of 34, Ibaka notched career lows in points (3.7 per game) and also saw his minutes diminished to just 22.1 MPG. Shortly after the news, Ibaka thanked the Dallas organization via Twitter and understood the business nature of the deal.

In other news, the Mavericks tried to address their depth by bringing in some younger blood, namely Caris LeVert, Wenyen Gabriel, Devin Robinson, as well as signing veterans in Steven Adams and Derrick Rose. They also brought back point guard, Ricky Rubio, on a discounted deal.

Around the league, on the heels of winning the championship and being named Finals MVP, Grayson Allen cashed in, signing a lucrative 3-year deal with the Grizzlies worth $60 million. Furthermore, Toronto have fast-tracked their title aspirations, wheeling in Jonathan Isaac and Dario Saric to pair with their already talented young roster.

                      He sure did!

His career really took off with the Thunder, molding into a Pau Gasol type of player.

On the final year of his contract, is this the last ride for Wall and Co.?   |   Bobby Karalla-USA TODAY Sports

With the Mavs 2024-25 schedule released on yesterday morning, Dallas will be opening their 45th season on the road against the Denver Nuggets.

Dallas will then head back home to host the Rockets on November 16 in a division rivalry.

On February 17, the Mavericks will look to avenge the heartbreaking loss to the Timberwolves on the last day of regular season, costing them a Playoff spot.

Dallas will then conclude their season on April 14, when they travel to San Francisco to face the Golden State Warriors.

You can see the full schedule below.

                          2024-25 Season Preview
A disappointing season last year having failed to make the Playoffs, the Mavericks appear to be on the last legs of their Big 3 era. With Wall, Cousins, and George all in their final year of contract, and at the ages of 34, this season could very well be the last of any title hope run.

In the offseason, Dallas dealt Serge Ibaka away to create some cap flexibility in free agency. With no draft picks, the Mavs injected some youth on the roster, signing the likes of Caris LeVert, Wenyen Gabriel and Devin Robinson. They were also able to bring back Ricky Rubio, whilst also signing veterans, Steven Adams and Derrick Rose.

On paper, the Mavericks look to be much deeper on the wing position but there are a lot of question marks surrounding their free agent signings in Caris LeVert and Wenyen Gabriel. Are they ready to take a bigger role and support the big 3?

Wow, you're gonna have an absurd amount of cap space in the summer of 2025 to reload and keep this franchise as one of the premier around the league. If this is the last season of the Wall era though, it's been a great ride and you did a great job of getting a lot younger around your big 3 without much to work with.

Since the Wizards were crowned the NBA Champions last season, many teams have undergone a number of changes over the long summer offseason. NBA.com's John Schuhmann will grade each franchise -- from the best team to the last -- in the inaugural Power Rankings for the 2024-25 NBA season.

The Bucks may have found a viable solution at the point, bringing back Malcolm Brogdon and sliding Giannis to his more natural position. But they are still a lot of work to do for this Bucks team.

Mavericks crush Nuggets in season opener

                                November 4, 2024 | by NBA News

Dallas seemed to have played with some extra grit tonight, crushing the Nuggets on their home turf by 37 points.

After a tight first quarter, the Mavericks then went on a massive 89-49 run for the remaining three quarters.

John Wall led with 18 points, 11 assists and 6 steals, while Bronx Johnson chipped in with 19 points off the bench. It was an all-around team effort, with 6 different Mav players scoring in double-digits.

After the game, Johnson spoke with reporters about his impressive season opener. "I think after the way we went out last season, you could see the bitter taste left on everyone. I wanted to prove my worth and contribute to this team. I'm glad all the work put in the offseason paid off tonight but we still got a long way to go. It's only just the first game of the new season."
