I hate combat in these kinds of games, but despite that I'm still loving BG3.
This genre of rpg always offers a lot of freedom, and BG3 is no different. It's shocking what you can get away with at times, and this freedom to play how you want makes up for the lack of interesting (imo) combat. The Dark Urge background in particular is quite fun. -

Pre-ordered the Deluxe Digital Edition for PS5.
I simply can’t wait. I will drop 700-1000 hours into this over the next several years!!!

Only a few hours in, but everything so far has been done so well. If the entire game carries the same quality then I can easily see it being game of the year.“No one is more hated than he who speaks the truth.”

I’m in the same boat as you. Just don’t like this style of combat as well. I’m on the fence about picking this game up personally. Enjoying Remnant 2 for now and we’ll see if I end up feeling the need to pick this up later.

Re: Baldur's Gate 3 - out now for PC, PS5 9/6
What is everyone playing as?
I've made a few different characters so far to try and get a feel for things.
Dark Urge origin background on all (because obviously)
Oathbreaker Paladin
Archfey Warlock
Currently considering making a sorcerer. Either Wild Magic or Storm.Comment

Yeah, I find the style of combat to be REALLY annoying. Especially at earlier levels, but I can't help but to enjoy the game.

Re: Baldur's Gate 3 - out now for PC, PS5 9/6
I meant to give my thoughts on the early game play of what I have tried so far. I'm only a couple of hours into any of these classes, and only level 4, so things will likely change later on.
Oathbreaker Paladin - I'm not a fan of tank/melee fighting classes in any rpg. I've always preferred casters or at times rogue types. The Oathbreaker subclass really intrigued me though from a story perspective, and so I wanted to try it out.
-Having high armor class does make things a lot easier, but having to get in melee range is a chore at times (even though you do hit hard, whenever your attack rolls hit which isn't often with my luck). I'm likely being overly critical due to my general dislike of the playstyle though because it is easier to play at early levels than either the warlock or sorcerer that I have tried so far.
-I don't think that this is a spoiler regarding dialog options, but I will wrap it just in case (no specific examples just generalization)
SpoilerI am very disappointed with how Oathbreaker does not completely change the "class" options in dialog. Whenever a "Paladin" dialog option pops up, it remains the overtly righteous type of response rather than something I would expect from someone who broke their Oath. I'm really hoping that this changes later on, but I really don't think that an Oathbreaker should ever act like a righteous knight in dialog.
Archfey Warlock - I always enjoy Warlock style classes. The kind of are certainly morally grey, which BG3 seems to follow.
-Spell options are certainly limited, but there is a very good cantrip that you have access to. This does offer fairly consistent damage (especially after you get your first powerup), but it does end up feeling kind of vanilla in playstyle. -I'm positive that they get stronger in higher levels (due to scaling of the previously mentioned cantrip), but ever early battle is intimidating due to low HP, low AC, limited ability for a short term burst in damage, and if your attack rolls don't hit then you're screwed.
-I haven't encountered too many dialog options yet where my class mattered.
Wild Sorcerer - Picked this because I think it really fits the Dark Urge background. Wild magic + wild thoughts. Plus it's a sorcerer which is cool.
-Feels very powerful early on. Still very squishy if enemies get close to you, but you several pretty good cantrips to deal with enemies and some powerful level 1 & 2 spells to burst them down to make sure that does not happen.
-Similar to Warlock, I have not encountered too many sorcerer specific dialog options yet. However, whether it's just been better luck or the result of a better distribution of attributes, I have passed many more checks in the open world which has allowed me to disarm traps or find hidden items.
-The "Wild Magic" subclass is really interesting with how it provides random bonuses or even negative effects for you.
-Sorc has offered the most enjoyable gameplay for me so far.Comment

Re: Baldur's Gate 3 - out now for PC, PS5 9/6
I am enjoying it. I love RPGs and this appears to be a mighty good one with a party system. The banter among your squad as you explore is what make RPGs great when they have a party system. Character customization is very deep. No stutters or frame rate issues for me at all with my 4090. The graphics are awesome. The combat is alright. Game give me the Dragon Age vibe with the party system and the banter amongst the group.
Diablo 4 was keeping me occupied, but now this will.Comment

Re: Baldur's Gate 3 - out now for PC, PS5 9/6
Okay so the map following is kind of wonky. I went the wrong way so many times following the map. It is like it is backwards or something. But I figured it out to follow the compass direction instead. What I thought was going left, wasn't going left. Had one freeze so far. During combat, one of my companions couldn't do anything, even though I was pressing the button prompt, nothing was happening.Comment

Re: Baldur's Gate 3 - out now for PC, PS5 9/6
Work and life have gotten in the way of playing this as much as I want to (which would be all the time). I will never be a fan of this kind of combat, but the more I get into it the less I dislike it. The early levels are a struggle as a caster, but things do open up after just a few. I would still rather have combat like in Dragon Age (or literally any other non cRPG), but I don't hate it.
Even though I'm less than thrilled by the combat, I'm ready to crown this game as GOTY, and it isn't close (Starfield has its work cut out for it). The progression, characters, banter, freedom create your own story...it is close to everything that I could possibly want in a RPG title.
On top of that, Larion's (the development company) gamer friendly decisions makes this game deserving of far greater accolades.
-No forced online connection
-Very little in the way of preorder bonus
-No Day1 DLC
-Not just no 'predatory' microtransactions, no microtransactions at all.
Onto the game - Really enjoying sorcerer gameplay, but I am disappointed by how little wild magic enters the game. To be honest, that is probably a good thing as it could potentially be gamebreaking, but it does feel like my sorcerer subclass is not existent for most of my playthrough.Comment

Re: Baldur's Gate 3 - out now for PC, PS5 9/6
Just about to wrap up Act 1 and I'll say this should be GOTY and I don't see anything beating it. I don't normally play too many games like this, but they've done such a good job I may go and play the Divinity games after this. Hopefully I am not too spoiled with this game to be unable to fully appreciate how good the Divinity games were for when they came out.“No one is more hated than he who speaks the truth.”

I'm 49 years old and have never played a game this good. This isn't just game of the year for me, it's Game of my Lifetime. You folks on PS5 have lots to look forward to in this game. I've never been a fan of turn based stuff and preferred action RPG's. This blows every single one of them out of the water. It's so much fun and the type of game where "5 more minutes" turns into 2 hours. It's an experience for sure. The amount of customization is crazy and there's just so much to do in the world.Comment

Re: Baldur's Gate 3 - out now for PC, PS5 9/6
The number of "If Else" statements in this games code has got to be insane. There are so many interactions that you do, or don't do, that impact things not just immediately but sometimes much later on. I have come across a couple that were not completely thought out, where specific set of actions triggered a scene which did not make sense (because the people had already left). But 99% of everything that I have come across has just left me like "wow, they really thought of everything when it comes to action/inaction and result".Comment

I’m having a hard time to starting. Feels like this with all Larian games to me.
At the point where you need to find a heeler and I’m at a mine and getting rekt by the bad guys.
