Look like a game of the year contender to me.

Re: Dragon Age: The Veilguard

I am pretty indifferent to Dragon Age myself, but I share a Discord server with a bunch of friends who are longtime Dragon Age fans and none of them are happy with what was shown in the trailer. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Given what I know about the series — it's a character-driven story featuring the ability to command teammates during battles, a lot of RPG gameplay mechanics such as leveling / gear / etc., and lots of open-ended dialogue interactions with your fellow party members and NPCs which can branch in many directions — I don't think this trailer did a good job of catering to returning fans. There was way too much leading the player by the nose to the next set piece, way too much mantling, the player character is Level 1 so the trailer could not demonstrate any potential depth in the combat system (it didn't show off any ability to issue commands to allies, and the player character kept spamming one sword ability), none of the dialogue choices were particularly consequential, and the ice lady's voice acting is extremely flat. It feels like this iteration of the game wants to be something very different than past versions of the game.

It's entirely possible this was just a bad trailer which quite deliberately doesn't demonstrate the full game (which... I get wanting to avoid story spoilers, but why would you cut a gameplay reveal trailer which doesn't make your game look as awesome as possible?). But my first impression, again coming from someone who isn't familiar with the series outside of what my friends talk about, was... okay at best. I've seen aRPG combat done better many times elsewhere. The thing I am more concerned about is that the people I know who want to like this game are already writing it off. BioWare might be on thin ice.

I've seen a lot of the same things. At first I was a little surprised by it, but I kind of get it.

I think people have been upset about the graphics and tone from the trailer. Graphically it looks good, but it also look a bit bright. This also applies to the general tone of the trailer. It seemed more comical-fantasy (almost Fable like) than gritty-D&D-Fantasy.

The actual gameplay walkthrough that was revealed seemed more in line with what I think most people expect though. So, that's a good thing.

I was a huge fan of the original game, but never played the sequels. Now, I'm going to try and play through them all before Veilguard comes out.

Re: Dragon Age: The Veilguard

The art direction is different but I think the game looks really good. Combat looks like it has counter indicators too. I’m guessing it will be good.

My one concern is that DAI was ope world. I liked that. This feels very linear. Not sure I like that.
