ELO (most known for its use in chess) takes into account the quality of the competition you've played and ranks you against them. I'm not sure what they're using for numbers though since they're generally along the lines 1500, 1900, or 2200. Mine is at 180 and I don't think I'm that bad, lol.

When I am playing a match, and I check the scoreboard my rank is at 1.

Yes, definitely. They go negative too (in this system) but I don't have any way of knowing how good 0, 100, 200, 300 are right now. Just that higher is better.
