I tried playing over the weekend and it was a major struggle for me to try and figure out what to do. I assume I was in the tutorial section, but it didn't come across as easy as I was on a planet with freezing cold temps and needed to upgrade my suit, but by the time I started to find the right material, it was game over.
The start is tricky for beginners because you don't have a lot of time before your suit's hazard protection runs out and leaves you susceptible to health damage. I'll explain it the early critical stuff here so you don't have to rely only on the in-game hints (though it is thorough, time still moves while the tutorials are up and it can be a little intense).

The process of getting on your feet is always the same - shoot small rocks for Ferrite Dust to repair the scanner, and scan for yellow plants - they contain sodium that you can use to recharge hazard protection. At that point you can go to the ship's distress beacon (the ship will always recharge your hazard protection over time, so getting there is priority), but before that you might also want to consider stockpiling some sodium for additional recharges and also collecting some Carbon (shoot plants) and Di-Hydrogen (shoot blue crystals) to craft a couple Life Support Gels. You might need some extra life support to survive the trip to your ship.

Once you reach your ship you'll go through some additional repairs (some of which will require more exploration around your ship's landing site) and eventually get airborne. But as long as you're carrying extra sodium and life support, you should be able to get through the early parts. Later once you're able to travel into space and to other planets, you'll be able to purchase Oxygen Capsules that are relatively cheap and never have to worry about running out of life support again. Hazard protection is always the main limiting factor on long surface excursions, but as long as you don't travel too far from your ship you'll always be fine and if you can find natural caves or buildings to take shelter in, you can move quite a bit further.

Let me know if you need any more help - getting started is always the toughest part in this game.

No Man's Sky: Desolation

Quote:
Scavenge and survive in the haunted wreckage of derelict freighters with the Desolation update. Introducing procedurally-generated freighters, more story content, combat improvements, freighter customisation and more!
This looks awesome. Also now have the ability to build teleporters on freighers and can get freighter inventory upgrades from the derelicts.

Re: No Man's Sky

Finally started this a couple of days ago. I too started off on a freezing cold planet and died very quickly. I was ready to pack it in and look for another game to play since dying within 10 minutes of beginning a game isn't that appealing to me, but I decided to stay with it and actually try to figure out what I was doing before giving up.

I'm a couple of hours in now and I still barely know what I'm doing of course, but it's enough to know that I will probably put several hundred hours into the game now.

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

No Man Sky is so damn good.

Whenever I say okay, I can put it down fully for awhile, they suck me back in. I'm going volcano diving!

Re: No Man's Sky

It looks amazing. Real tight graphics upgrade. Metals look like metals, just found a swamp planet with fogs and mist. Scanner HUD is tight. Space actually looks alive. Lord I love this game.
