    Dragon Quest Builders

    Not just another Minecraft clone.

    Product Info
    Dragon Quest Builders
    Platform: PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita
    Genre: Action/Adventure, Slight Role-Playing Elements
    Release Date: 10/11/2016
    Price: $59.99 Playstation 4 Physical&Digital. / $39.99 Vita
So what the hell is this game? It's basically TerrariaxAnimal CrossingxMinecraft set in the Dragon Quest universe.

It is a base builder. You break blocks and build with those blocks. I'd say outside of that, the similarities to Minecraft end. Without going too much into the story, you are the builder of legend. People will want to join your town, and you have to build things for these people. NPCs will give you quests and you get rewards for completing them.

Setting certain things in rooms designates that room. For instance: If you put a bed, a lightsource, a pot and a special sign in a room it designates that room as a private bedroom and you can designate (via the sign) who that room belongs to. Another example would be a chest, a lightsource and a cooking fire in a room makes it a crude kitchen. The NPC villagers will make food in the kitchen and put it in the chest that you can pick up (or leave there) at the end of the day.

There is both a PS4 and a Vita demo version available. I highly suggest checking them out if you have any interest in a game like this - it's very good. The story is ~50 hours long, without taking into account exploring, building and refining your town. Multiple areas accessed via teleporters and boss fights in the game.

You don't level up, but quest rewards items that permanently boost HP and you can create better armor/weapons which is where character strength progression comes from.

All that out of the way - I've had an absolute blast with the game.

Here's a couple screenshots from my basic town I'm working on in the game.

Looks interesting...I've never played the dragon Quest series but I've been wanted to try this one out for a while.

Eh, I might agree if the story wasn't 50-100+ hours.

I've been following your tweets and I read more about the game just now. Sounds really cool.

Oh well. On to Chapter 2, with a minor detour into their Terra Incognita world. Seems like that's more "creative" where you still have to do stuff but there's no monsters in the home world unless you take specific portals. You can share/download others creations there too.

My son DL'd the demo and really enjoyed it.
Looks like a Christmas gift once the price drops.

Played the demo today. I liked it. I've played a dragon quest game or two so the world was familiar. I had tried Minecraft briefly but while I'm not a graphics whore in anyway I just couldn't get over the blocks. DQB has better graphics, and seems to have some direction with quests to play out. That's great too.

Will probably be picking up the next time I'm near a Best Buy.

Kids like it and my daughter bought it. So far so good. I do think that price is high for the graphics imo. Just looks like a 3DS game.

I like the demo as well. On my list.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

The exact reason I never played Minecraft though 9 year old nephew keeps trying to get me to. DQB, on the other hand, was love at first site of the demo yesterday. Traded in Octopath Traveler and spent 15 bucks on DQB!
