It continues Layla's modern day story so it does tie in somehow. Check the Reddit Q&A a dev did. I like that they're creating new stories with more unique characters.

The one thing that bothers me about this game so far is that the User controlled character can't equip a shield.

The producer said because he's a mercenary and not a Spartan Soldier or whatever that's why he doesn't have a shield.

One thing better be improved and that's the HUD options. Crap was terrible in Origins and the patch still left a few things that I wanted to turn off. Hoping that they don't make the same mistake two years in a row even though I wouldn't be surprised if they do. It's a shame that the older games have better HUD options than Origins.
