Carraggi's Corner: Global Throwdown

Thanks for stepping into Carraggi's Corner, where we are always off the wall but promise to at least stay in the room. In this space, we will tackle this and that, these and those -- strap up!

Beyond all those musical cheese graters known as vuvuzelas, referees that should be poster boys for Lasik, and the snipers picking off strikers from afar (wait, they are falling like that on purpose?), the World Cup is good for one thing: indisputably proving which nation is the cream of the football (soccer) crop.

Clearly, as EA has proven by making bank off a glorified roster update and what amounts to downloadable content, there is a considerable market for proving that one nation is better at something than another.

So how about proving who the best is at something truly global: video games. Or more precisely, video-game characters.

Most gaming icons are birthed out of single-player games, and the vast majority of commercially successful single-player titles here in the US are specifically geared towards the American market -- American dialects, American settings, American trends, and most importantly, American characters.

With that in mind, it would not be fair to stack up one nation against another -- I doubt Kazakhstan really measures up well to the US. Instead, let’s trim the fat and have a good ol’ alliance of everyone else against America. (Obviously, this list will miss some characters on both sides, but think of it more like the first strike in a global battle.)
