Add to that the fact that the whole city was let out of work/school at the same time and the traffic is a nightmare every single normal night and you end up with a disaster. Atlanta's traffic is regularly a nightmare.

It snows fairly frequently in Atlanta, too, which makes this issue all the more severe. 2011 had similar issues, when the city saw 4"+ of snow. They upgraded their fleet of salt/sand trucks from 12 to nearly 70 now, but it still wasn't much use when the temperature was 20 degrees and traffic was clogging all the roadways. I think the return time on average for a 2"+ event is every 2.3 years. The airport on the south side of town averages a little over 2" per year (no doubt, it's more like 3" in the northern suburbs).

They have a huge problem with their infrastructure, evidently.

Same with Birmingham, just on a smaller scale population wise.

And I don't care if you grew up in Antarctica, nobody can drive effectively on an inch of solid ice.

Good response to the Northerners chuckling at "those silly Southerners in the snow"....

CNN anchor tried to throw the ATL Mayor under the bus for kids being stranded at school and literally on buses overnight. Guess she doesn't know that schools are controlled by independent school districts. The mayor can't dictate when schools open or close.

Yep, I remember that you're from here.

Most of the city is shutdown, as it should be. Too dangerous with all of the ice.

I go to college in Tampa now, but I lived in Pensacola, Fl for my whole childhood and never seen a drop of snow, now as soon as I go off to college, Pensacola sees "snow". Pretty disappointed im not there to see it, but seeing pictures of Palm Trees with icicles hanging off of them is pretty cool.

All of them screwed up. The schools should have never been open, the government should have been shutdown/working from home. When the government and school is closed, traffic is never bad, for example MLK day.

The school systems take the lead from others also though. There are many in the area, but if the main ones close, the rest would also.

I knew we were getting snow and that it wasn't going to be a dusting on Monday. I'm not a weatherman, I just looked at the forecast. The idiot Mayor, Governor, School systems decided that a chance of 1-3 inches wasn't good enough to shut down. Yes it wasn't set for the time, but all the forecasts leading up to Tuesday all said 1 up to 3 inches.

I went to the grocery store on Monday and planned to not leave my house until Thursday at the earliest. Atlanta cannot drive in snow and ice makes it even worse.

Also, the ice wasn't causing most of the accidents, those happened before it got cold enough for the ice. It just that people don't get that you have to slow down, not hit your brakes, not touch the gas while your wheels are turned, etc. The overpasses do ice quickly, but the highways were fine until at least 4PM with all the people on them. Just too many people all leaving at the same time, add in snow and you get this.

Re: So what's the weather like where you live?

It's always cold as balls and randomly snowing in Great Lakes. I consider 18 degrees to be warm, now.

**** hit the fan, back home. The ice on the roads was insane.. has nothing to do with the actual snow.
