Big difference between Canada and southern USA.

In Canada, people go to school in blizzards(and have recess in them too!) and schools don't get closed unless something serious happens(the ONLY time my elementary school ever closed down, was cause the power went out in the middle of the day. It was a huge storm that day and school wasn't cancelled. lol,parents/kids were mad. Parents mad cause they already dropped off the kids to school, and kids mad cause if their parents couldn't pick them up,they were stuck there until end of day).

Luckily for me,I didn't go that day anyways lol

Pretty much. The roads were skating rinks though due to sleet. If the buses can't safely navigate the neighborhood roads they delay or close the schools.

Texas

Really though it's because the only equipment they use to combat it is trucks that spread out sand. Last month it snowed and the roads were passable, but then it melted, and refroze as a pure sheet of ice. Unlike the north where it's just snow that can be cleared and not sheets of ice.

I just got put under a Winter Storm Warning. Looks like a nice mixed precipitation event overnight with snow, sleet, and freezing rain. The freezing rain could be pretty bad depending on what happens. I hope I don't lose power...

I lost power for a week during the December 2002 ice storm.

One thing people have to remember is that a lot of southern cities don't really have snow plows or snow removal equipment. We have them around here since we get accumulating snowfall at least a few times per year on average, but not an adequate amount to plow neighborhood streets, etc. Places like Atlanta, Birmingham, etc. have much less than that, not even enough to manage the primary roads and interstates, in many cases. I do think they close schools too easily even around here, but it's mostly because of buses not being able to navigate safely (and the buses have to navigate untreated neighborhood roads).

Should I make fun of you northerners that can't handle a little 90F heat with dew points in the 70s? When that happens in Chicago, people starts having strokes, etc.

I'd rather have the heat and humidity vs the snow and cold, but I enjoy the changing of the seasons too. It's just been a tad too much this winter for most people.

Spent a week in Dallas several years ago in August. Walked and played 18 holes of golf in the heat and came back to a swimming pool. Sleeping, I received a nice painful "Charley Horse." ie drink more water.

Hell of a storm here. I'm without power as are over 3/4th of the people in my area. I have over 2" of glacier (mixed snow/sleet/freezing rain) on the yard and a lot of ice accretion in the trees with gusty winds earlier. This is the worst ice storm in a decade and maybe longer in my immediate area.

To continue my trend of useless context, it's a week later and the heat was shut off all day, the apartment temp (around midnight currently) is 82.

A nice 60 degrees today, but still not enough to melt all the snow yet.
